EVERYTHING WE LEARNT FROM MARK HUGHES: POST YORK CITY (H)

/

After Carlisle United’s 3-0 defeat against York City at Brunton Park, we spoke to Head Coach Mark Hughes.

Speaking to CUTV, he discussed the impact of key moments, a loss of structure after the second goal and the importance of refocusing for the games ahead.

Here is everything we learnt:

1. A tight contest for long periods

“It was a game, wasn't too many chances in fairness. Up to their second goal, I thought we certainly matched them.”

2. The penalty incident changed the momentum

“At 1-0, we're very much in the game, asking questions of them. But the second goal, that really killed the way we played.”

3. A missed opportunity at a crucial time

“Georgie (Kelly) had a really good one in the first half, probably he'll feel that he should have converted that.”

4. Loss of belief after falling further behind

“I think we lost a little bit of structure, a little bit of shape and a little bit of belief.”

5. Game management from the opposition

“They were very good in terms of their game management. They slowed the game down and took their time, which they’re quite within their rights to do.”

6. Small margins in a low-chance game

“It wasn't a great game in terms of chances. The key moments for them, they were able to capitalise, and we didn't.”

7. The challenge of patience against a possession side

“You've just got to wait for them to make a mistake and then everybody has to react. Those moments were few and far between.”

8. Refocus on the run-in ahead

“We've got a lot of games to play and a lot to achieve this year. All we can do now is make sure we win the vast majority of the games we've got left.”
