United’s four-game unbeaten spell came to an end with a 5-0 defeat from York City at the LNER Community Stadium.
Strikes from Malachi Fagan-Walcott, Alex Newby, Josh Stones and an Ollie Pearce brace gave the Minstermen the three points.
Mark Hughes made two changes from the Blues' 2-0 win at Altrincham on Saturday, with Sam Murray and Harvey Macadam coming in for Cameron Harper and Junior Luamba.
Luke Armstrong found space within the opening minutes to unleash a shot from the right of the host’s penalty area, but could only ripple the side netting.
The Minstermen led within five minutes when a miscommunication in the United defence allowed Joe Felix to fire a cross into the Blues' penalty area, where Fagan-Walcott was there to nod home.
Stuart Maynard’s side continued to pressurise the United defence with Mark Kitching bursting through a gap and unleashing a ferocious shot which Gabe Breeze pushed away for a corner.
A heroic last-ditch block from Alex Gilliead prevented Newby from a tap-in at the back post after York had made a quick break down the right wing.
The hosts continued to threaten as Alex Hunt’s low free-kick was diverted onto the back post by Kitching’s stooping header.
York were allowed the chance to double the lead in the 39th when Newby was sent through on goal and looked to round Breeze, but the United stopper tripped the hosts' attacker with an outstretched leg, which saw referee Zac Kennard-Kettle award a penalty.
Pearce made no mistake from the spot, smashing his penalty past Breeze.
Joe Grey nearly made it three on break, racing down the right only to be denied by Breeze at his near post.
The Yorkshire outfit had their third in the 44th minute when Hiram Boateng flashed the ball across the United box for Pearce to divert past Breeze.
Pearce was close to wrapping up his hat-trick minutes later when he dragged an effort just wide after Felix had burst away from the Blues' defence.
Armstrong tested Harrison Male in the York goal shortly before the break with a snapshot on the turn from Harvey Macadam’s driven cross.
HALF-TIME: York City 3–0 Carlisle United
York started the second half with the same intensity as the first, with Tyrese Sinclair getting onto a long ball and firing a volley which Breeze had to save.
Stephen Wearne came close to narrowing the deficit when Male failed to collect Regan Linney’s through ball with Wearne flashing his effort wide.
Newby made it four for the hosts in the 48th minute, heading Grey’s cross into the top right corner.
Georgie Kelly had the Blues' first effort of the second half, having his shot from the edge of the box deflected wide.
Male showed sharp reflexes to deny Morgan Feeney from close range after he got his head to Callum Whelan’s drilled cross.
Fagan-Walcott found space in the 77th minute to try his luck with a low effort from the edge of the box, which drifted narrowly wide.
York substitute Stones added a fifth in the 85th minute, making the most of some loose United defending to slot past Breeze.
