Macauley Langstaff netted a match-winning brace despite the Blues having plenty of opportunities of their own in front of goal.
United made a bright start through Regan Linney, who powered forward but saw his effort deflected by Brandon Cooper into the arms of Will Norris.
David Ajiboye showed some neat footwork to drive into the Salford half; the ball eventually came to Linney, who lifted a shot over the bar.
The Blues continued to put pressure on the Ammies' goal with Miguel Azeez collecting Callum Whelan’s corner, which was cleared, but his deflected strike went narrowly wide.
The visitors took the lead in the 14th minute through Langstaff, who raced onto Ryan Graydon’s through ball and slotted past Archie Mair.
Rosaire Longelo nearly doubled his side's lead, curling a left-footed shot wide of Mair’s far post.
Leo Duru got United back on the front foot, flying down the right with his cutback finding Georgie Kelly, but he could only fire straight at Norris.
Kelly soon tested the Salford stopper again, powering onto a looping ball in the penalty area, but he failed to find the net.
Junior Luamba looked to make an impact as a first-half substitute with his cross-finding Duru at the back post, who nodded back to Linney, but his effort was saved.

Josh Williams came on for Duru at half-time, and it was his low cross that reached Linney at the back post, but his shot was blocked.
Langstaff doubled his tally for the evening in the 56th minute, firing past Mair from inside the penalty area.
Jonah Lowes nodded a tame header straight at Norris as United attempted to revive their hopes of getting a result.
Lowes tested Norris again this time from range, which was comfortably saved before Will Rafferty shot straight at the Salford keeper.
