The Blues faced a strong Newcastle United side this afternoon as they continued their 2025/26 preparations.
The Blues named two separate teams for each 45-minute period, as did the hosts Newcastle United - whose teams featured plenty of first team experience.
United started the contest in competitive spirit, providing a great match to strong Premier League opposition.
The games first chance came on 20 minutes as Will Osula forced Gabe Breeze into a top save, before Trevan Sanusi missed the target soon after.
Sean Longstaff broke the deadlock five minutes later. After receiving the ball on the edge of the Blues’ box, the midfielder took a touch and fired from distance, ultimately beating what was an unsighted Breeze in the visitors’ goal.
Elliot Embleton created two brilliant chances from set-pieces for Mark Hughes’ side in the time that followed, but neither found the back of Nick Pope’s net.
As the first-half entered its final moments, Osula and Joe Willock both had brilliant opportunities to double the Magpies’ advantage but were unable to hit the target.
HALF-TIME: Newcastle United 1-0 Carlisle United
The Blues had to be alert at the beginning of the second-half to deny both Harvey Barnes and Ben Parkinson, with Sam Murray and Aaron Hayden making the much-needed blocks, respectively.
Barnes would continue to cause a threat down Newcastle's left, and would soon force Harry Lewis into a smart stop.
At the opposite end, Ethan Robson had Carlisle's first chance in front of the hosts' goal in the second-half, however, Sven Botman was there to block and avert the danger.
The Magpies took advantage of a United error on 65 minutes to extend their lead, with Joelinton stealing possession before finding the back of the net.
Jacob Murphy made it three ten minutes later, showing great ability to get beyond our defence and roll home, before Parkinson made it four in the dying embers.
Despite the result, it provided plenty of positives in terms of fitness and competitive spirit for United.
Mark Hughes' side now heads to Wales for their pre-season camp, prior to facing AFC Fylde next weekend.
