ARCHIE MAIR: "EVERYONE DUG IN FOR EACH OTHER."

.

Goalkeeper Archie Mair praised Carlisle United's togetherness after his crucial penalty save helped the Blues secure a 1-0 victory over Salford City and progress to the second round of the Emirates FA Cup.

Mair produced a defining moment in the first half, denying Ryan Graydon from the penalty spot before Morgan Feeney blocked the rebound.

The goalkeeper was delighted with the performance and the contribution of the whole squad as United extended their unbeaten run to eight matches.

"It was a brilliant afternoon. The boys did everything that the staff asked of us. The fans were great again and to get the result was brilliant.

"We played them in pre-season and thought we gave a good account of ourselves that day.

"We knew that if we played as well as we could, we'd have a chance of winning the game. We all believed that."

Mair explained how preparation helped him make the penalty save, with the squad having studied Salford's spot-kicks ahead of the tie.

"We watched their penalties yesterday because we knew there was a chance of a penalty shootout.

"We weren't entirely sure which way he was going to go, so it was about standing big and trying to make the save.

"Thankfully I went the right way and Morgan managed to block the rebound, so I was delighted."

The goalkeeper was also quick to praise the defensive effort in front of him, highlighting the collective determination shown throughout the afternoon.

"I could name every single player out there. Toby [Mullarkey], Galv [Ryan Galvin], Leo [Duru], every single one of them was brilliant.

"I don't actually think I had another save to make apart from the penalty, which shows how well they played.

"Everyone dug in for each other, and all the substitutes came on and contributed as well. We were delighted."

Mair believes the Blues must now carry their momentum into next Saturday's Enterprise National League fixture against Boston United, while remaining focused on taking each game as it comes.

"We can't get too high. We need to reset and go again against Boston next Saturday.

"We didn't start the season as well as we wanted to, so we're keeping our heads down, working game by game and at the moment it's going well.

"We just need to carry on, not get too ahead of ourselves and keep trying to grind out wins."
