ROB ELLIOT: "WE NEED TO GET BACK TO OUR IDENTITY."

.

Head Coach Rob Elliot wants Carlisle United to respond when they return to Brunton Park to face Woking on Saturday, following last weekend's defeat at Eastleigh.

United head into the weekend with Elliot keen to ensure the performance on the south coast proves to be nothing more than a setback.

The Blues used the week to regroup, with a practice match against Preston North End helping several players gain valuable minutes as preparations continued for Saturday's encounter.

Elliot said: "We managed to get a practice game in against Preston (North End) for some lads who needed minutes and to be able to work on a few things.

"For us, we just want to reset and get back to the performances that we've done of late and make sure Eastleigh was a blip along the road.

"There's lots of reasons why, or you could argue there's lots of reasons why, the performance was poor with how much disruption there was to the team, but ultimately we still expect better from ourselves, so the only thing we can do is put it right tomorrow."

While disappointed by the result, Elliot believes the Eastleigh defeat came after a run of performances which deserved more reward.

He feels the focus now must be on maintaining consistency and showing a reaction in the right way.

"I don't think there's too much wrong with the lads in terms of how they are.

"I just think the two games before that we should have won and we haven't. We've missed chances and should have put the game to bed, so then the Eastleigh result probably compounds on top of it a bit more rather than it being one poor performance out of some good ones.

"We have to keep focusing on the work, making sure we have a response on Saturday and showing how much it hurts and how much we care. We do that by performing, not by trying to fix things from the first minute."

A key message from the Head Coach this week has been the need for his players to handle setbacks better during matches.

Elliot believes United must become more resilient and continue playing with confidence regardless of the challenges they face during a game.

"I think the mentality needs to be that we deal with setbacks better.

"When we get a setback, or something goes against us, whether it's an opposition shot, a corner or a goal, we tend to go under for a little bit and feel the pressure.

"But like I said to the boys, I'm the only one under pressure, and I'm fine with that because that's part of football. I want to see them go out there with no fear and show that mentality to score goals, perform and be at their very best."

Despite recent frustrations, Elliot remains convinced the squad is moving in the right direction and believes supporters can already see the identity the team is developing.

He is now looking for that progress to be reflected in both performances and results.

"I think we've done it really well on the whole.

"You can see the difference in style of play, and we've got a lot of credit for the performances, but we need the results to come with that.

"For Saturday, we need to get back to our identity, back to who we are, back to being aggressive, moving the ball, keeping the ball and creating opportunities."
