EVERYTHING WE LEARNT FROM MARK HUGHES: POST ALTRINCHAM (H)

/

After Carlisle United returned to winning ways with a comfortable victory over Altrincham, we spoke to Head Coach Mark Hughes to get his assessment of the performance.

Speaking to CUTV, he reflected on a controlled display, standout individual contributions and the importance of building momentum heading into the final stretch of the season.

Here is everything we learned:

1. Control established once the lead was taken

“Once we went in front, the game became quite straightforward for us. From that point on, we were comfortable and able to build on our advantage.”

2. Defensive solidity limited the opposition

“They didn’t create much at all. I think they had four shots on target across the whole game, which shows how well we managed things, particularly in the second-half.”

3. A performance built on good game management

“In the second-half especially, we were very much in control. We didn’t allow them any real opportunities to get a foothold in the game.”

4. The right response to last week’s disappointment

“We approached it with the right game plan. They’re a good side and have had strong results against good teams, but we made things difficult for them and handled the occasion well.”

5. Discipline without the ball was key

“They want you to jump out and leave space for angled passes into dangerous areas. We denied them that, stayed patient, and eventually they ran out of ideas.”

6. A rewarding afternoon for David Ajiboye

“He’s been patient and trained exceptionally well this week, which earned him his opportunity. I thought he was a real outlet for us, got a goal and an assist, and could have had more.”

7. Luke’s consistency continues to shine through

“You always know what you’re going to get from Luke [Armstrong]. His work rate was excellent and I thought he competed brilliantly in the air against two big centre-halves.”

8. Composure returned at the back

“Bevis [Mugabi] gave us that calmness and experience. He’s trained well for a number of weeks and although he tired late on, it was an easy decision to bring him back in.”

9. A special moment for Charlie Wyke

“It was great to see him back on the pitch and receive such a warm reception. He’s a top-level player and it’s been unfortunate how injuries have affected him, but now he can start building again.”

10. Confidence growing as the season reaches its climax

“We know how tough this league is, but we’re in a position where we can influence what happens at the end of the season. That’s exactly where we want to be.”
