Rob Elliot says the Blues are ready for the challenge of the season opener against Worthing, with the Head Coach pleased by the progress made throughout pre-season and the way his squad has embraced a new style of play.
United welcome the newly promoted side to Brunton Park on Saturday, and Elliot believes the foundations have been built for a positive start after a productive summer of work.
Following the final pre-season outing against Derby County under-21s, Rob confirmed the squad came through the game well, with several players continuing to build fitness ahead of the opening weekend.
"It was good. It was a good top-up for the lads who played at Salford and it was good to get minutes into lads who needed them or are coming back.
"Overall, it was good. Obviously, it was a mixed team in the first-half with some young lads, but it's good to see them as well. It was a good result and we finished strong."
On the injury front, Elliot revealed positive updates with several players returning to training.
"Brad [Nicholson] and Kenton [Richardson] are back training now, which is good. Wearney (Stephen Wearne) and Josh Williams are back as well.
"Morgs (Morgan Feeney), Bevis [Mugabi] and Harvey [Macadam] are on the grass. Harvey's scan was good news because it wasn't actually an injury, it was just an issue with an old injury, so his recovery will be quicker."
With the season opener now approaching, Elliot has been encouraged by the group's attitude and their willingness to adapt despite a disrupted pre-season.
"The group's been brilliant. It's been a bit disjointed because of injuries and personnel, but in terms of the buy-in, the way the lads train and the buy-in to the concepts has been excellent.
"We've created a lot of opportunities and we've been defensively solid. We're asking lads to play in different positions at the moment, but that's what the squad is for."
United's new approach under Elliot has focused on being aggressive and playing on the front foot, something the Head Coach knows will continue to develop over time.
"The lads have had to take time to adapt to it. We're trying to change the dynamic of the team and push ourselves up 10 or 15 yards, and that's not something we're going to crack on the first day.
"We want to be on the front foot. We want to be aggressive and make a statement with and without the ball.
"It's not always going to be as clean as you'd like it to be, but the lads have been excellent with it and we look fit and strong."
Elliot also praised the players for embracing the ideas introduced by himself and his coaching staff, while ensuring the team's identity allows individuals to show their strengths.
"It's a really good group. We've got some fantastic human beings who care about the club and want to be here.
"The football we want to play and the concepts we want to see are coming out, but we also have to adapt it to certain players because we don't want to take away what makes them good."
The shift from pre-season friendlies to competitive action has already brought a different intensity around the training ground, with Elliot pleased to see his squad eager for the challenge ahead.
"Training yesterday was really good. The intensity had definitely gone up a little bit.
"The lads are looking forward to the start. There's no apprehension, they just want to get going and play in front of the fans.
"We know we can't win the league on Saturday, but what we can do is make a start. We've just got to keep improving every week."
Elliot also confirmed his captaincy structure ahead of the campaign, with Morgan Feeney named skipper and Callum Whelan appointed vice-captain.
"Morgs has not been on the grass, but in terms of the first five weeks, he's probably the best captain I've seen whether I was playing or coaching.
"The way he manages the lads, the standards he sets and the morals he's got, he's been exceptional. He's a credit to himself and the club."
On Whelan, Elliot added: "Whelo is a different type of leader. He's quieter, but he goes about his business really well.
"He's someone who's always been consistent for me on and off the pitch, and that's where he gets the respect from the lads."
The Head Coach believes those leadership qualities and the culture being created within the squad will be vital throughout a long campaign.
"We're going to have a blip at some point. That happens to every team.
"What you fall back on is your standards and your culture. That's what's been pleasing; it's a group that I trust and a group I'm really fond of already.
"We want a team that people can be proud of before they even step on the pitch."
Looking ahead to Worthing, Elliot expects a difficult opening test against a side he believes will provide a stern challenge despite only recently earning promotion.
"They're an excellent team. Their manager has got great experience at this level and they play really good football.
"There will be spells where they'll have the ball and dominate because that's the way they play, so we'll have to be patient at times but also aggressive when we don't have it.
"I fully expect them to be in the top 10 next year. It'll be one of the toughest tests, but it's a great opportunity to start the season well."
Elliot knows Carlisle must earn the right to win, regardless of expectations.
"We expect to win and we want to win, but just expecting to win doesn't mean you can.
"You've got to do all the things to earn that right. If we get the press right, understand our roles and do the basics well, then we give ourselves a great chance."
The Head Coach is also looking forward to the impact of a packed Brunton Park, with supporters playing a key role as the Blues begin their campaign.
"We've got a huge club with a fantastic fan base. We know we want to get out of this league, but we can't do it on Saturday. What we can do is make a start.
"The support can give you two or three per cent before the ball even kicks off. The atmosphere, the momentum when we're attacking and the resilience when we're defending can really change games.
"Everyone's on the same page and moving forward, and that's what I'm looking forward to."
