Head Coach Rob Elliot wants Carlisle United to maintain their recent improvement and approach a demanding run of fixtures with the right mentality as they prepare to face Solihull Moors on Saturday.
The Blues travel to the ARMCO Arena looking to build on a positive spell of results, with three games in a week providing an opportunity to strengthen their position in the National League table.
Elliot believes his side must remain focused on their own performance, insisting that consistency in the fundamentals will be key to continuing their progress.
“The expectation is to win every game, rightly so, because of the size of the club. But the reality is that it's not as simple as that,” he said.
“You've got to go there with the confidence that you can go and win the game, but the understanding as well of why and how you win the game.
“It's doing the basics well, because there's a lot of talent in this group, as you can see from the opportunities we create and the individual brilliance.”
United have shown encouraging signs in recent weeks, and Elliot was pleased with the response following the defeat to Woking last month. However, he stressed that the squad must continue to build on those performances rather than allow standards to drop.
“The only thing that we can use that as is a wake-up call and make sure that we raise our levels to make sure that doesn't happen again,” he explained.
“The performances and the results have been better since then. Obviously, we're still disappointed we didn't beat Kidderminster and we should have done, but that's all I can ask, and we just need to keep that going forward into these next three games.”
Saturday's opponents have endured a difficult spell in terms of results, but Elliot is wary of the quality within the Solihull squad and believes United must be prepared for a challenging afternoon.
He highlighted the importance of starting well and preventing the hosts from gaining confidence, regardless of their current league position.
“Statistically, they shouldn't be anywhere near where they are. They've got really good players in every position and, for whatever reason, it's not clicking,” he said.
“When it does click, I do think they are way above where they are currently in the league.
“For us, our mentality has to be to go there and make sure that we don't give them any sort of sniff of hope or anything that they can cause an upset with. We need to be ruthless on that.”
The trip to Solihull Moors begins a busy period for United, who will also face Harrogate Town and Altrincham within the next week. Elliot knows the schedule will test the squad's depth and ability to manage workloads.
He believes the entire group will have a role to play, with recent team selection decisions providing opportunities for players to demonstrate their value.
“We're going to need the whole squad. We're going to need the bodies, and we need to go and maximise the points return from that week because it's a good opportunity to change the look of the table quite quickly,” he said.
“You go and get three wins, and it can look very different to what it is now.
“For me, it's still big on the performance and the mindset, because I think if our performance and our mentality are there, then the results will come.”
Elliot was also encouraged by the contribution of several players during the recent Emirates FA Cup victory over Tamworth, including defender Kenton Richardson, who impressed on his first start for the club.
The manager praised Richardson's experience, leadership and understanding of the team's approach, while also highlighting the importance of having competition for places as the schedule intensifies.
“Kenton's performance was assured. He's got a lot of experience at this level, he's still hungry, he's a real leader, he communicates and he understands the patterns of play,” Elliot said.
“Even though it was his first game, you'd think he'd played 20 because he knows how we want to play.”
There was further encouragement in the return of injured players to the training pitch, although Elliot confirmed that Luke Armstrong – whose travelled with the squad to Solihull Moors – and Harvey Macadam would need to be managed carefully as they work towards full fitness. Georgie Kelly also remains some way from a return to training.
With a demanding week ahead, Elliot's message remains clear: Carlisle must concentrate on their own standards, approach each fixture with confidence and ensure their recent progress translates into further points.
The focus now turns to Saturday's meeting with Solihull, where United will look to deliver the performance required to continue their momentum.
