Ahead of Carlisle United’s game against Altrincham at Brunton Park on Saturday, we spoke to Head Coach Mark Hughes.
Speaking to CUTV, he discussed the benefits of extra recovery time, lessons from the York City defeat, squad togetherness, and the importance of regaining momentum.
Here is everything we learnt:
1. Making the most of an unexpected break
“You've got to take advantage of that. A few of the guys were creaking a little bit, so the extra days give you an opportunity to get them back up to speed.”
2. Reflecting on the York City defeat
“We were disappointed to lose a really important game, but we always look back at every game we play and pull the positives out of negative results.”
3. Fine margins shaping the outcome
“Up to the penalty decision, I thought it was a very even game. Sometimes when you look back, it can seem different to what you felt on the evening.”
4. Focus on what’s still achievable
“If it means that we're in a playoff position, then we've got to make sure that we're in the best position we can be. Playoff games have been great here in recent times.”
5. A strong and unified dressing room
“The lads are really strong together, and that's important. We need to stick together and make sure we get to where we need to get to.”
6. Productive time on the training ground
“We've had more time to reflect properly and work on things. Now we just want to get back to playing.”
7. Managing niggles ahead of the weekend
“We’ve got a few doubts. Extra 24 - 48 hours will help in that regard, but these are the players that can come in.”
8. Respect for Altrincham
“They’re a good side. They get the ball down, have good talent at the top end of the pitch, and they’re in a good vein of form.”
9. Momentum the key at this stage
“Momentum's huge. We need to get back straight away to winning ways, and that's our intention.”
10. Praise for Academy progress
“Every time I see them play, they put in good performances. Winning is important alongside development, and they’re progressing really well.”
