On Saturday 27 September, the Carlisle United family — supporters, staff, friends and relatives — will come together at Derwentwater for our annual Walk for Wilkesy, in memory of Dave Wilkes, our former Head of Coaching.
This year, all funds raised will go directly to the Carlisle United Community Sports Trust to support their mental health and suicide prevention programmes — vital work that tackles stigma, encourages open conversations, and provides crucial support to those who are struggling.
Dave Wilkes — known affectionately as "Wilkesy" — was a much-loved figure at Carlisle United, not just for his work on the pitch, but for the care, kindness and integrity he brought to everyone around him. His passing was deeply felt across the club and the wider football community.
Walk for Wilkesy is our way of honouring Dave’s memory and ensuring something positive continues in his name. It’s a day to reflect, remember, and rally together — a reminder that no one should ever feel they have to face life’s challenges alone.
As in previous years, the Academy will once again be showing their support, with players from every age group — under-9 to under-19 — taking part in the walk.
Last year’s walk raised £700 thanks to the generosity and support of everyone who took part. This year, we’re aiming to reach £1,000, with all proceeds going directly to Carlisle United Community Sports Trust, whose mental health and suicide prevention programmes make a real difference across Cumbria.
Your donations will help the Trust deliver education, outreach, and support initiatives for young people and adults, using the power of sport to connect communities and create safe, supportive spaces.

The walk around Derwentwater is suitable for all ages and abilities and offers a meaningful way to take part in something bigger — a movement for hope, understanding, and change.
Held during Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, Walk for Wilkesy stands alongside national initiatives such as the Baton of Hope, which continues its journey across the UK, spreading awareness and encouraging life-saving conversations.
Together, with the support of the Carlisle United family, we can help challenge the stigma and offer hope to those who need it most.
