YOUTH MATCH REPORT: CARLISLE UNITED 1-5 SHREWSBURY TOWN

.

Carlisle United under-18s fell to a tough defeat against Shrewsbury Town at the Sheepmount.

Tai Bell's brillaint chip proved to be a consolation, as United shipped five goals at home to Shrewsbury.

Mark Birch made four changes from the midweek defeat away to Lincoln City, with Brad Robinson, Jack Hodgson, Finley Boertien and Josh Wade replacing Sam Worth, Zac Tonge, Lewis Lambert and Simon Rigby.

The Blues were forced onto the backfoot from the kick-off, with Shrewsbury dominating the early possession.

Less than five minutes into the game the Shrews took the lead through Jeval Thompson-McKenzie, who capitalised on a Brad Robinson error to head in on the goal line.

Shrewsbury would double their lead six minutes later, when Finley Boertien lost possession on the edge of his box, which was capitalised upon by Leon Hughes, who finished cooly into the bottom corner.

Thompson-McKenzie, who was Shrewsbury’s danger man throughout the match, hit the post after being sent through on goal.

The Shrews continued to dominate the first-half, and would’ve gone further ahead if not for Jamie Hodgson’s brilliant goal line clearance.

United struggled to create many chances in a difficult first-half, their only effort on goal came through Nathan Wheatley, whose effort was straight at Shrewsbury ‘keeper Lennon Barton.

HALF-TIME: Carlisle United 0-2 Shrewsbury Town

In the opening 10 minutes of the second-half, United kept the ball well but continued to struggle creating clear-cut chances.

The Blues’ creative issues came back to bite them when Jamie Hodgson tripped Thompson-McKenzie in the box and conceded a penalty.

Jay Snook, Shrewsbury’s number nine, converted the spot kick to give them a comfortable advantage.

The Shrews would get their fourth of the game less than 15 minutes later, as Hughes smashed the ball from distance past Robinson.

Jeval Thompson-McKenzie would get his second of the afternoon, getting on the end of a whipped ball to the back post to finish first-time.

The Blues would pull a goal back late on, as Tai Bell finished past substitute ‘keeper JJ Male with a brilliant dink, after latching onto Jack Hodgson’s ball through.
