ROB ELLIOT: "WE NEED TO BE RUTHLESS AND RESILIENT."

,

Rob Elliot says Carlisle United must show greater ruthlessness in front of goal and resilience when faced with setbacks as the Blues prepare to welcome Hornchurch to Brunton Park.

United earned their first point of Elliot's tenure last weekend at Yeovil Town, with Harvey Bunker's late equaliser securing a 1-1 draw after the Blues had created a number of opportunities.

While pleased with the response to going behind, Elliot believes there are still areas for his side to improve as they look to secure their first victory of the season.

"I think the mindset, obviously, to keep going to the end, to make sure we got a point from the game, was good," he said.

"I want an increase in our quality, especially around the final third, because I think that was the thing. We got into really good areas, just like we did against Worthing, but our final ball probably let us down or our final decision.

"So I expect tomorrow for that to be better. We know it's going to be a tough test, but everyone is, especially when teams come here."

Elliot has been encouraged by the chances United have created in their opening games, but wants his players to develop a more ruthless mindset when opportunities arrive.

"We don't need to do too much different," he explained.

"Sometimes when you look at the results, the result against Worthing is disappointing. But on another day, we score six or seven.

"It's just about making sure that mindset's right in the final third, that ruthless mindset, whether it's the extra pass into the final third or the opportunities when we do get a chance in front of goal.

"We're creating the opportunities. We're limiting the opposition to four or five shots a game, but we've got to be ruthless in both boxes. That's where it matters."

Hornchurch arrive at Brunton Park having made an excellent start to life in the National League, and Elliot expects another demanding test against a side he believes are well equipped to compete at this level.

"They've got a really experienced squad," he said. "Probably one of the biggest teams we'll play this year, really heavily dependent on set pieces.

"They defend the box really well. They've got excellent energy and runners in the forward areas.

"Hornchurch will be very strong and I fully expect them to be absolutely fine this year, as you can tell from their start."

Elliot knows his side will need to be alert to the visitors' strengths, particularly from dead-ball situations and on the counter-attack.

"We need to make sure that we have a good start against them and make sure we stop any counter-attacking opportunities.

"We've got to be really, really switched on and diligent from set pieces because that's where they look to affect it.

"They've got their shape, they've got the way they play, they don't change. And they're very, very effective at it. They're well coached."

With opposition sides likely to view a trip to Brunton Park as a major occasion, Elliot says United must embrace the expectations that come with playing for a club of Carlisle's size.

"I think if you want to be a top footballer and you want to be successful and you want to be successful here, you have to deal with a big fanbase and an expectant fanbase and a desire to get out of this league," he said.

The United boss admits his side must learn to manage setbacks better, particularly when the atmosphere changes following a moment of disappointment.

"Overall, I don't think anyone would disagree that over the whole course of the game, we were the better team. However, we didn't manage the moments well.

"We need to learn to deal with setbacks better.

"We have to get better at the fact that opposition will get a fluky goal or they'll have a period of play for five minutes and we have to work hard, get together, stay compact, have that resilience to make sure that we can't get played through and then get back on top.

"Everything is telling me that we're doing that and everything I'm seeing, but it's the big moments we need to manage better."

United could also welcome captain Morgan Feeney back into the squad this weekend, with Elliot delighted to have his skipper available again.

"He's our captain, he's our leader.

"He's the best centre-half in the league last year, so to have him available on Saturday in some capacity is massive and he typifies the mentality and the mindset that we want.

"Any team having Morgan in is going to be better, but to have our leader and our captain back is massive."

Kenton Richardson also returned to action last weekend, and Elliot believes the experience and leadership of both players can have a significant influence on the squad.

"Just that leadership, that physicality and that willingness to drive forward," he said of Richardson.

"But off the pitch, I think if you speak to anyone around here, they'll tell you the influence he's had already.

"It's massive to have leaders and winners here and that's what we need."

With more players returning to fitness, Elliot is hopeful competition for places will only strengthen his squad in the coming weeks.

"It's good to have Kenton and Morgan available and it gets the squad a little bit stronger.

"Hopefully soon I'll have difficult decisions to make in terms of the squad because players get back fit and we just get stronger as we go."

Elliot is keen for United to embrace the opportunity to claim their first three points at Brunton Park, but insists there is no need for his players to become consumed by the pressure of getting their first victory.

"We want to win every game and we plan to win every game," he said. "I think that doesn't change on Saturday.

"What probably is more important for the players is to get that monkey off their back and be able to then push forward.

"But it needs to come from mindset and mentality. It needs to be resilience.

"It needs to be able to play in front of this fanbase, play the football we're looking to play, but still be aggressive, affect the goal, press high, still do the honest stuff, work hard, win your headers, win your first and second balls – the basics that have never changed in football.

"And I think if you do all those things with the ability you've got, then the three points will come and they'll keep coming.

"But it's not just about getting the first three points. It's about getting them every single week and making sure we get better and better."
