Remembering Bobby Johnston (1933–2025)

.

Carlisle United was saddened to learn of the passing of former player Robert 'Bobby' Johnston, who has died at the age of 92.

Bobby was one of the last surviving members of the legendary United side that held First Division Birmingham City to a dramatic 3-3 draw in the FA Cup in January 1957 — a match played in front of a record crowd and remembered as one of the great days in the club’s history.

Between 1952 and 1960, he made 130 appearances in League and FA Cup competitions for Carlisle United, becoming a reliable and composed presence in the side during a transformative period in the club’s history. Remarkably, despite his significant contribution on the pitch, Bobby remained on a part-time contract throughout his time at Brunton Park — meaning that even after that famous cup tie at St Andrew’s, he was back at work the following morning.

Born and raised in Carlisle, Bobby turned down offers from several clubs after leaving school, choosing instead to learn a trade. He made his United debut in February 1952, though his early footballing progress was interrupted by two years of National Service in Germany, where he occasionally represented the British Army football team.

Upon returning to Carlisle in 1956, Bobby’s elegant, constructive style of play earned him a regular place in the first team, and he went on to become a fan favourite before hanging up his boots in 1960.

Away from football, Bobby spent most of his working life at Hudson Scott’s (Metal Box), where he trained as a lithographic printer. A committed trade unionist, he served as both secretary and later president of the local NGA branch.

A gifted all-round sportsman, Bobby also represented Cumberland at cricket, and in later years enjoyed bowls and following horse racing. He remained in Carlisle throughout his life and was a proud and passionate member of the local community.

Bobby leaves a son, Eric, and a daughter, Audrey, to whom the club extends its deepest sympathies.

The family visited Brunton Park to view Bobby's tribute in the display cabinet outside the ticket office (see above) and laid some flowers in the Memory Garden (see below).

Everyone at Carlisle United sends their heartfelt condolences to Bobby’s family and friends at this time following his funeral this morning. His service to the club and to his community will not be forgotten.
