After scoring the first hat-trick at Brunton Park since Charlie Wyke against Mansfield Town in 2016, Regan Linney spoke to CUTV.
Speaking on his hat-trick, he said: “It’s a special feeling scoring a hat-trick at home in front of all the fans.
“It’s a special feeling, but the main thing is getting the three points, and the boys were very good today.”
Linney dispatched home emphatically on 14 minutes to put United ahead.
“I just saw Wearney [Stephen Wearne] in a little bit of space, and I thought [that] if he sets me nicely, then I’ll get my shot off as quick as I can, and luckily it went in the far corner.”
The 28-year-old got his second of the afternoon from the penalty spot. Linney dispatched routinely after neat footwork from Callum Whelan won the penalty.
“I enjoy taking penalties. At any time [if] I can take a penalty, then I’ll be the first one to step up if required. [I’m] delighted to score the penalty.”
Linney sealed his hat-trick with a glancing header from a Cameron Harper corner on 65 minutes.
“I scored a couple of headers last season, but it’s not one of my strongest points, so I was glad to score a header as well today.
“I was on the keeper, and I just thought [that] Cammy [Cameron Harper] had put a few [corners] in front post, so I just thought I’d gamble on that and luckily it went in again.”
On how scoring his first hat-trick for the club at Brunton Park made him feel, he said: “It’s a special feeling. That’s what I play football to do to take my chances”
“I think the last game we played, I had a couple of chances and probably should have had two away from home, so to score a hat-trick today makes it that extra bit special.”
Linney wasn’t the only Carlisle player on the scoresheet on Monday afternoon, with Jack Ellis scoring his first goal of the season on 80 minutes.
“When I saw it go in, I was absolutely buzzing with him [Ellis].
“Another player as well, Callum Whelan, [was] really good in the middle of the park today. I’m close with him, so I’m buzzing as well.”
Monday’s victory saw United pick up back-to-back wins for the first time this season, after the Blues defeated Wealdstone on Saturday evening.
“It’s almost the perfect bank holiday, isn’t it? We’re all delighted, but we’ve just got to concentrate on the next game now and hopefully get another three points.”
