MULLARKEY MAKES LOAN SWITCH FROM FLEETWOOD TOWN

.

Carlisle United are delighted to announce the arrival of Toby Mullarkey from Fleetwood Town on a half-season loan deal.

Mullarkey, 29, arrives at Brunton Park from the Lancashire-based outfit, bringing a wealth of EFL and non-league experience to the Blues' backline.

The Warrington-born defender began his career in the Academy at Crewe Alexandra, spending time with Everton before returning to Crewe to continue his development. After a loan spell with Leek Town, he established himself in non-league football with Nantwich Town before joining Altrincham in 2019.

During four seasons with Altrincham, Mullarkey became a key figure at the heart of the defence, making more than 130 appearances in all competitions and helping the Robins consolidate their place in the National League. His consistent performances earned him a move back into the EFL with Rochdale in January 2023.

After making 12 appearances for Dale during the second half of the 2022/23 campaign, Mullarkey joined Grimsby Town ahead of the following season. He enjoyed an impressive first full campaign in the Football League, featuring 48 times in all competitions and scoring twice as he established himself as one of League Two's most reliable defenders.

His performances earned him a move to League One side Crawley Town in the summer of 2024, where he played 37 matches across all competitions during the 2024/25 season, helping the Red Devils in the third tier before joining Fleetwood Town the following summer.

Head Coach, Rob Elliot said: “With the injuries we’ve had, Toby’s physicality gives us an important presence in the group, but it’s his understanding of the game and his ability to take on information quickly that will help him adapt.

"He’s shown a great willingness to learn and has settled in well. He’s a great person, and we want people here who are fully invested, who want to be part of the group and are committed to what we’re building. This is a great opportunity for Toby to showcase himself, and we’ll see where it can take us.”

Sporting Director, Marc Tierney added: "Toby joins us with experience of playing at a higher level, and from our first conversations it was clear he wanted to be part of what we're building here at Carlisle.

"He brings strong leadership qualities, an excellent physical presence, and is very comfortable in possession. We're confident his attributes and experience will make him an important addition to the squad, and we're delighted to welcome him to the club on loan until January."

This move is subject to ratification from The FA, EFL and National League.
