MATCH REPORT: CARLISLE UNITED 5-2 BOSTON UNITED

.

Carlisle United progressed in the Emirates FA Cup after a 5-2 win over Boston United at Brunton Park.

David Ajiboye, Luke Armstrong and Josh Grant all got on the scoresheet while Chris Conn-Clarke grabbed a brace with Keiren Donnelly and Lenell John-Lewis scoring for the Pilgrims.

Mark Hughes made several changes from the Blues' 1-0 win at Scunthorpe United the previous weekend, with new signing Conn-Clarke making his debut while Harry Lewis started in goal.

Conn-Clarke was influential from the off, finding Armstrong in the penalty area within five minutes with a wicked cross, which the United striker headed over the bar.

Ajiboye gave the Blues the lead in the sixth minute, receiving the ball on the right wing, standing up the defender and cutting in to curl an effort into the bottom left corner.

United were relentless in their siege on the Pilgrims' goal, with Morgan Feeney seeing his header from a corner cleared off the line before getting on the end of another delivery, which forced Rhys Lovett into a sharp save.

Grant added a second in the 15th minute, flicking Conn-Clarke’s corner via Ajiboye past the helpless Lovett in the Boston goal.

The Blues had a third a minute later when Josh Williams burst down the right and found Armstrong, who got ahead of the defence and fired into the corner of the net.

Callum Whelan tried his luck from 40 yards out with a floated effort which just cleared the crossbar.

HALF-TIME: Carlisle United 3-0 Boston United

Graham Coughlan brought Donnelly on for Liam Waldock at half-time, and he made an instant impact, heading Marcel Lavinier’s cross past Lewis in the United net in the 46th minute.

The visitors had a second three minutes later with John-Lewis powering a header home from Matty Carson’s corner.

Lewis had to be at his best to prevent an equaliser with both Connor Teale and Frankie Maguire testing the Blues stopper.

But United responded in style in the 60th minute with Williams starting the attack in his own half, powering forward before combining with Whelan to find Ajiboye, whose back heel found the Blues number eight, who picked out Conn-Clarke in space to slot the ball into the bottom right corner.

Conn-Clarke got his second, and the Blues' fifth, in the 78th minute, picking up a loose ball on the edge of the visitors' penalty area and hitting a speculative effort, which Lovett could only parry into his own goal.

Kelly nearly made it six late on when Williams and Sam Hetherington combined to allow the United right-back to cross, which the Irishman fired against the bar.
