EVERYTHING WE LEARNT FROM STEPHEN WEARNE: POST TAMWORTH (A)

.

After Carlisle United’s 2-1 defeat away at Tamworth FC, we spoke to Stephen Wearne.

Speaking after the game, Wearne discussed the disappointing result, his goal in the match and the need for the squad to respond.

Here is everything we learnt:

  1. Disappointment after the result

“Yeah, really disappointing.

“It was a really poor game and nowhere near good enough from ourselves.

“So yeah, we want to forget it and move on quickly from that.”

  1. Not approaching the game in the right way

“I think when you come to places like this you know what you’re going to get.

“I don’t think we approached it with the right mentality. The first 20 minutes we were a little bit sloppy and maybe tried to play in areas we shouldn’t have done.

“And yeah, we got punished.”

  1. Struggling to adapt during the game

“It was tough, especially on a day like today when there wasn’t much zip on the pitch.

“Maybe we could have approached it differently but that’s on us as players to work out the problems we’re facing during the game.

“We just didn’t get it right today.”

  1. Taking the chance for his goal

“It’s always nice to score goals.

“It’s my job to try and create and try and score goals so hopefully more will come.”

  1. A strike from the edge of the box

“I hadn’t really had many opportunities in the game.

“So as soon as I received it on the edge of the box I just thought I’d put my foot through it and try to hit the corner.

“Luckily it’s gone in.”

  1. Letting the lead slip

“I don’t know what changed to be honest.

“It’s been a theme recently that when we take a lead we struggle to manage it and you saw that today.

“Once we went 1-0 up we kind of went under a little bit and they started creating chances.”

  1. A frustrating pattern

“I don’t know whether it’s a mentality thing or what but it seems to be a common theme.

“It’s frustrating because we’re good players and we’re a good side and we’ve shown that many times this season.”

  1. No excuses with the travel

“No, we’re not going to make any excuses.

“Carlisle’s a long way from everywhere so everywhere is a long journey.

“We’re all professionals and athletes and we make sure we’re in the right state to play games.”

  1. Using the week to respond

“We’ll watch the game back, see where we can improve and have a good week of training.

“We’ve got eight big games left and we’ve got to give everything to try and finish as high as possible.”

  1. Appreciation for the travelling fans

“A huge thank you to them.

“They follow us everywhere and I can’t imagine that was a great watch for them.

“So apologies for that and we’ll be better.”
