We caught up with forward Hugh Parker to discuss his first few weeks at Carlisle United, adapting to senior football, and the buzz around the camp ahead of Saturday’s clash at Brunton Park.
Speaking to CUTV, Parker reflected on settling into a new area, making his debut in front of a packed crowd, and building confidence during a strong run of results.
Here is everything we learnt:
1. Loving life at Carlisle United
“I've actually loved it so far. The lads, the gaffer and the coaches have all been really welcoming. I’ve been going around the city, up to the castle and stuff. It’s a good environment, so I’m loving it so far.”
2. Teammates helping him settle
“All the lads have been real nice to me. Sam [Hetherington] has been helping me out, and [Georgie] Kelly - a fellow Irish lad - has been showing me the ropes.”
3. Moving away has helped him adapt
“It’s a big step going from Ireland to England - new environment, new people. I think doing that before really helped me. I’m more used to it now and more comfortable.”
4. A proud debut moment
“It was sick to be fair. That’s probably the biggest crowd I’ve played in front of. Even the other day, 400 fans travelling four and a half hours - the support is amazing.”
5. Family watching back home
“They were watching on the TV, so they were delighted to see me out there for the first time.”
6. Adjusting to senior football
“It’s a lot quicker. There’s strength in Ireland too, but I think the quality is a bit better over here. You’re up against men now, but I’m finding it really good.”
7. Handling expectations
“There’s obviously expectations. You want to show what you’re about in front of the supporters. I just want to do my best, get some goals and help the team through this period.”
8. A tough run of fixtures
“It’s been a tough run, but six points from nine is good. Rochdale away was tough, Scunthorpe were fourth at the time, and Forest Green was a big win. A good few games for us.”
9. First assist brings belief
“There was some buzz when the goal went in - it was mad with all the supporters screaming. I didn’t do much for it, but I’ll take the assist! It’s definitely calmed the nerves.”
10. Confidence high ahead of Saturday
“Morale is pretty high. Everyone’s confident and you can see it in training. We want to keep the run going and I’m buzzing to be back at Brunton Park in front of the home crowd [this weekend].”
