Following the Blues’ victory at Gateshead, we spoke to goalscorer Elliot Embleton.
Speaking to CUTV after the game, Embleton reflected on his return to action, his first goal for the club and the importance of building momentum as the season enters a crucial phase.
Here is everything we learnt:
1. A special moment back on the pitch
“Buzzing, first goal for the club and it’s good to be back playing after having a bit of time out.”
2. Relief after a frustrating spell
“Obviously it’s what I want to be doing, playing football and scoring goals. It’s frustrating when you can’t do that so to be able to get back in today and get a goal is brilliant.”
3. Capitalising on the high press
“We had a press that we wanted to do during the game. We managed to nick the ball and go through and I managed to put it in.”
4. Pressing work drilled in training
“All the coaching staff go through what we want to try and achieve in the game. To be able to put it into a game is good.”
5. Celebrating in front of the travelling supporters
“Massive obviously. My first goal for the club and 3,500 fans here today, it’s brilliant support.”
6. Overcoming injury setbacks
“I’ve had injuries in the past and it’s never good. When you start the season well and then get injured so early it’s really frustrating, but I’m just happy to be back.”
7. Support from teammates and staff
“Being around the lads every day and seeing the staff every day helps. You put the work in, in the gym and then you get back out on the pitch.”
8. Excitement for a crucial run of games
“It was a huge one today after getting beat against Boreham Wood so we’re back on track. We’ve got two massive home games and we just need the fans to get behind us and get as many points on the board.”
9. Belief in putting another run together
“We’ve shown we can win games. We were 10 or 11 unbeaten going into December. Now it’s about getting back on track, winning games, scoring goals and picking up as many points as we can.”
10. Inspiration from the supporters
“It’s massive having that support. Away or at home, seeing fans come in numbers really helps.”
11. Focus already on the next test
“It gives us a great platform going into Morecambe next week. It’s a home game and another three points is all we need.”
