After Carlisle United’s defeat against Chatham Town in the Isuzu FA Trophy, we spoke to midfielder Callum Whelan.
Speaking to CUTV, he discussed the slow start, the difficulty of breaking down well-organised opposition, the pride of captaining the side and the importance of responding at Solihull Moors.
Here is everything we learnt:
1. A disappointing outcome
“Yes, obviously disappointing. We came here to win. We had enough senior players and a good enough team to win.”
2. A second-half effort without reward
“I thought we had a go in the second half, but we weren't good enough in the final third. Didn't play in their half enough.”
3. Frustration at missing a Wembley opportunity
“As much as the league is a priority this season, it’s disappointing not to continue in this competition. It was a good chance to get to Wembley as well.”
4. Preparation matched ambition
“We prepared for this game like we would any other. And we came here to win. We try and win every game.”
5. A slow start proved costly
“We actually said before the game it was important to start quick. I just don't think we started well enough.”
6. Control without incision
“I think we had enough control second half to work their box better and create more, but we never really did.”
7. A well-drilled Chats defensive display
“They defended really well, and they made it difficult. We didn't put enough balls into the box, and we didn't have enough shots.”
8. Pride in captaining the side
“Yes, of course. I'm proud to do it. Everyone knows how much I love Carlisle and being at Carlisle.”
9. Patience is paying off personally
“I've had to be patient and humble and work hard and wait for my chance. Luckily enough, I've played the last few.”
10. Appreciation for the travelling support
“The following and the support we have is unbelievable. We weren't at our levels today, which is a shame for the ones that come, but they'll be at Solihull right behind us again.”
