Carlisle United are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of John Mavis, a much-loved coach, lifelong supporter, and dedicated servant to football in our community.
John, a proud Carlisle United fan since childhood, made a strong contribution to the club over many years. He was widely known for his long-standing work organising the ball boys alongside Barrie Mossop, a role he carried out with pride, professionalism, and great care for the young people involved.
His commitment extended far beyond matchdays. John was the kind of figure who made everyone around Brunton Park feel welcome, valued, and part of something special.
Alongside his volunteer work at Carlisle United, John was an influential youth coach across local grassroots football. He managed and mentored young players at several local teams.
Chris Blake, Head of Academy Coaching, paid tribute to John’s impact both on and off the pitch: “I'm deeply saddened to hear of John's passing. I grew up in Thursby, and he was a big supporter of the community and one of mine and my brother’s first football coaches.
"As a young coach, I was fortunate enough to spend a lot of time with John as his assistant at Thursby JFC and Carlisle United Under 9s. He was a great mentor to me in the early stages of my coaching career, and many of the practices and values I still hold now were shaped by my time with John.
"I’ll never forget his passion and care for Carlisle United and for coaching young players. My thoughts are with Fiona, Gemma, Chris, Ashley and all his family.”
John was also fondly remembered by those who grew up alongside him.
Martyn Vevers, Commercial Assistant at Carlisle United, reflected on a friendship stretching back over five decades: “I first knew John when we were at Caldew School together back in 1974.
"Even then, he stood out as a huge Carlisle fan and someone everyone got along with. He carried that same good nature with him throughout his life.
"When he worked at Carlisle United, he took great pride in organising the ball boys, and he always had time for people around the club. He also spent many years working at Pirelli in Carlisle and had only recently retired.
"Everyone at the club sends their sincere regards and deepest sympathy to his loved ones. John will be missed by so many of us who were lucky enough to know him."
John leaves behind a legacy defined by generosity, mentorship, and an unwavering love for Carlisle United. His influence will continue to be felt across the football community for many years to come.
