ARCHIE MAIR RETURNS ON PERMANENT DEAL

/

Carlisle United are delighted to announce the signing of goalkeeper Archie Mair on a permanent contract.

Mair, 25, joins the Blues on a one-year deal, with the club holding an option to extend by a further year.

The Scottish shot-stopper spent the second half of last season on loan at Brunton Park, having joined the club in January.

Mair began his career at Aberdeen before joining Norwich City as a youngster, where he continued his development and gained valuable experience.

Loan spells followed during his time with the Canaries, including at King’s Lynn Town, Notts County and Gateshead, before he joined Morecambe.

He moved to Carlisle on loan last season and featured against Brackley Town on the final day of the regular season, as well as in a number of behind-closed-doors fixtures, giving the club the chance to take a closer look before making the move permanent.

Speaking after completing the switch, Mair said: “I’m delighted. I really enjoyed my five or six months here from January onwards.

“From day one, I enjoyed the club as a whole. You can see the direction it’s going in, and it feels like it’s trending the right way, so I’m really pleased to be back.

“I played the Brackley game and some of the behind-closed-doors games, and I felt I performed well. The club has rewarded me with a contract, and now I’m looking forward to kicking on.

“Hopefully the fans will see more of me going forward. I’m confident in myself, I’m calm, I like being on the ball and I enjoy being in possession.”

Sporting Director, Marc Tierney said: “We’re really pleased to bring Archie back to the club on a permanent contract.

“His loan spell last season gave us the chance to get to know him properly, and he made a really positive impression around the group. He fits the profile of player we want to bring to Carlisle United. He is young, has strong experience already, excellent physical attributes and a professional attitude.

“We feel he adds real competition and quality to the goalkeeping department, and we believe he can be an important part of the squad next season.”

Head Coach, Rob Elliot added: “I’ve worked with Archie before at Gateshead and know what he can bring. He is a goalkeeper with good presence, confidence and the ability to play with the ball at his feet.

“Having played in that position myself, I know how important mentality and consistency are, and Archie has shown he has the right character to keep developing.

“He is at a good stage of his career, with plenty of experience behind him but still a lot of room to grow. We’re looking forward to working with him again.”

This move is subject to ratification from The FA and National League.
