FRIENDLY: Workington 0 - 3 United

Report from the Saturday afternoon game

9 July 2022

The busy run of summer fixtures continued with the weekend trip to Workington on Saturday afternoon.

With things ramping up the starters were out there for 60 minutes, a change from the straight first half, second half split of the previous two friendlies.

Kristian Dennis missed out for a family wedding, with the Charters, Fishburn and Patrick injury situations confirmed and explained by the manager at his Friday press conference.

United attacked first when Gibson cushioned a header in midfield. Devitt looked up and picked out Edmondson, and he drove on before finding Armer in support. His low cross was grasped by Atkinson.

Holy had to show safe hands from a Tinnion free kick as he went for the target, and that sparked another away attack as the visitors flooded out. Armer delivered high, and Edmondson met it with a header. The keeper was there to pick it up once again when it landed at his feet.

A Dave Symington corner was well defended by Barclay at the other end and the flag went up as Leslie volleyed from the edge of the area.

Carlisle took the lead thanks to a patient move as Edmondson flicked a neat touch for Sho-Silva to feed off midway inside the home half. He spread it wide to Ellis, and the wing back worked hard to keep his marker at bay. Devitt took over with a lovely delivery and Edmondson was there to nod at the nets. Atkinson saved, but the striker was quick to react with a firm finish.

Workington had moments in the United half through the opening 25 minutes but a Symington cross that smashed into the side netting was the closest they came to finding a way through.

A surging run from Edmondson took him into the area when the Blues came again as they continued to look after the ball, but he had it nicked off his toe just as he shaped to shoot.

The lead was doubled for United when Guy split the defence with a raking through ball. Edmondson's first contact was perfect and he slotted it away despite a touch from the hand of the onrushing stopper.

Hughes broke the lines as the Reds looked to respond and his pass on the run skipped across the face of goal. Leslie threw himself at it but he couldn't find the finish it needed.

United turned defence into attack from inside their own area on 35 minutes with Whelan, Guy and Devitt calm on the ball. Kilsby and Armer got involved, and Edmondson was lively up front. He angled inside his man but his attempted lob was too close to Atkinson.

Armer spotted Gibson in space moments later but the attacking midfielder was closed down by Clarke. He turned away to get help from Guy, but his long-range rattler climbed over the bar.

Second-year youth striker Nic Bollado was on for Edmondson at the start of the second period, but it was Callum Guy who nearly took centre stage with just 38 seconds gone when a scuffed clearance came his way. Atkinson was off his line, and the skipper had just one thing in mind as he went for goal from all of 40-yards. It struck the post, and Sho-Silva was caught offside as he looked for the loose pieces.

Devitt popped one high after good work from Ellis as the Blues settled into their stride, but it was down to the avalanche of subs to carry that on just after the hour mark.

Liam Lightfoot nodded high when he got on the end of a difficult cross, and Carr showed strength to get to the ball and hook it high as United broke. Nugent shot but it took a deflection and curled wide.

There was an incisive move from the away team on 75 minutes when Moxon crunched a pass forward from inside his own half. Hilton trapped it and turned quickly before slicing the defence apart. Nugent latched onto the pass but his 19-yard shot on the run was parried.

Both teams worked hard in the late afternoon heat, and United added a third when an inswinging corner was sent into the back of the net with the defenders under real pressure from Feeney ... and there was an appreciative round of applause from the sizeable crowd when the final whistle blew.
