YOUTH: United 6 - 1 Oldham

Report from the Saturday morning home game

28 November 2020

United found a ruthless streak on Saturday afternoon when they made it six games unbeaten with six goals and six different scorers as they put Oldham to the sword.

The game started at a fast pace and the young Blues were ahead with just four minutes on the clock. Good work from Bell saw him turn his man, and Dylan Garvey was in close attendance as he sniffed an opportunity. He wasn't to be disappointed as he stroked the ball past the keeper when it came his way.

Oldham looked to respond and a low cross flew across the face of goal as it begged to be slotted away. The strikers had checked their runs and the moment was gone.

More danger came United's way as the Latics broke, but an open goal was somehow missed from just six yards out. The ball crashed against the crossbar and Robinson reacted first to scoop it up.

Carlisle settled into a good pattern of play and Fishburn doubled the advantage from close range with quarter of an hour gone.

And the screw was turned yet further when excellent set piece deliveries from Bell started to cause all kinds of problems.

Defender Josh Barnett was first to take advantage of an arrowed inswinger when he bullied his way through bodies to get enough on his header to send it into the net.

And right back Roan Steele was next in the queue when he lost his marker from another well worked corner. The keeper could do nothing as a bullet of a header whipped past his dive.

Into the second half and substitute DJ Taylor made a real impact with a determined run as he pushed the defending line back, and he had the presence of mind to pick out Bell as he entered the box. A clipped shot whisked past a despairing dive.

Oldham grabbed a consolation with just over five minutes left to play when they exploited a gap between midfield and defence. Robinson tried to close the distance but he could do nothing about the shot.

The Blues made it six just before the whistle blew when Charlie Watt bent his movement to get between the two centre backs. With plenty still to do he kept his eye on the ball and volleyed a rasper over the line.

United - Robinson, Steele, Barnett, Day, Kilsby, Ellis (Taylor 56), Leslie (c), Walton, Garvey (Watt 65), Bell, Fishburn (Rooks 83). Subs - Breeze, Simons.

Goals - Garvey (4), Fishburn (15), Barnett (27), Steele (31), Bell (77), Watt (87)
