Carlisle United have completed the signing of Brad Nicholson from Gateshead for an undisclosed fee.
The 27-year-old defender has signed a two-year deal with a one year option for the Blues, becoming the latest addition to Head Coach Rob Elliot’s squad ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
Born in Sheffield, Nicholson is a left-footed centre-back who can also operate at left-back, bringing balance, versatility and experience to United’s defensive options.
The 6ft 2in defender arrives at Brunton Park following his spell with Gateshead, where he worked under Elliot and established himself as an important part of the side.
Known for his power, athleticism and quality in possession, Nicholson also brings a major attacking threat through his long throw and his ability to contribute in the final third.
Head Coach, Rob Elliot said: “Brad is a winner. He wants to win, he will give everything for the team, and he will give everything for the players around him.
“He has some excellent attributes, with the obvious one being his long throw. That gives us a real dimension and the option to be more direct when needed. There will be times this season when teams are difficult to break down, and Brad gives us another way of asking questions.
“He also scores goals, which is a fantastic asset, but the area where I think he has really developed, and maybe surprised a few people, is how good he is with his left foot on the ball.
“When he steps forward and gets into good areas, he can really add to us. His work on the ball is among the best in the league, which shows how much he can contribute to the balance of the team.
“What is also important is his versatility. Brad can play as the middle centre-half, on the left side of a three, and he can also play at left-back if needed.
“Alongside the other options we have, that gives us really good flexibility, whether we play with a back three or a back four.
“As much as we want balance on the right side, Brad helps give us that on the left as well. He really completes the defensive unit and gives us a nice balance going into pre-season.”
Brad said: "I throw myself into everything and play without fear, I'm known for my long throw as well which has been an asset. I can't wait to get started at Brunton Park and help the club get back to where it belongs. Rob is brilliant, a fantastic coach with great knowledge and a genuinely nice person."
Sporting Director, Marc Tierney, added: "Brad is a quality defender we've been tracking for some time. He impressed us last season, brings natural balance on the left, and has the qualities we're looking for. This is a great opportunity for him to make a real impact here."
