Carlisle United have completed the signing of defender Kenton Richardson following his departure from Gateshead.

The 27-year-old has agreed a one-year deal at Brunton Park, with the club holding an option for a further year.

Richardson adds further strength, experience and versatility to Rob Elliot’s squad ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

The defender made 130 appearances for Gateshead, all in the National League, and was a key part of the side that won the FA Trophy at Wembley in 2024.

Richardson began his career at Hartlepool United, making his League Two debut at the age of 17 after signing his first professional contract in March 2017.

He has also had spells with Spennymoor Town, Sunderland and Notts County, bringing strong defensive experience and the ability to play across the back line.

Head Coach, Rob Elliot said: “Kenton is someone I know really well, and as a manager one of the biggest things is trust.

“He is an unbelievable person, a fantastic captain, and someone who sets standards every day in the way he conducts himself. He leads by example, and I think he will add a lot to the group in terms of culture, leadership and professionalism.

“From a football point of view, he is an outstanding defender and someone I trust completely. Whenever we came up against strong opposition, he was always the one we trusted to mark the best players and take on those big responsibilities.

“He is also really flexible and can play across the back line. Physically he is very good, he is quick, strong, comfortable on the ball, and he gives us real versatility.

“He has excellent experience at this level and he knows what success looks like. He was a huge part of Gateshead staying up last year, and before that he played a major role in reaching the play-offs and winning the FA Trophy.

“Overall, he is someone I trust, someone I know will add to the group, and someone I still think has a lot more to come.”

Kenton said: "My mind was made up, as soon as I found out about the move I was buzzing. It's a fantastic club with great potential and I really want to kick on from here."

Marc Tierney, Sporting Director, added: "Kenton is a commanding defender with the physical presence and qualities we were looking for in that position. Coming into his prime he arrives with the hunger to make a real impact and help drive standards in the group."
