MATCH REPORT: YORK CITY (H)

/

Carlisle United fell to a 3-0 defeat against York City at Brunton Park.

Goals from Josh Stones, Alex Hunt and Alex Newby were the difference for the Minstermen as they went a point clear at the top of the Enterprise National League.

Mark Hughes made two changes from the 3-3 draw against Solihull Moors, with Jack Ellis and Cameron Harper returning to the starting line-up in place of Ryan Galvin and Elliot Embleton.

The Minstermen took the lead after six minutes when Ben Brookes broke onto a deflected through ball and found Stones to tap home within the six-yard box.

United looked to respond quickly, with Chris Conn-Clarke lifting an effort at goal which dropped just onto the roof of the net.

Georgie Kelly was gifted a great opportunity when Aaron Hayden won a tackle on Stones in the York half with the ball carrying through to the Blues’ striker, but he shot straight at Harrison Male.

A flighted cross from Conn-Clarke found the head of Kelly, but his effort flew high over the crossbar.

HALF-TIME: Carlisle United 0-1 York City

Conn-Clarke attempted to spark the Blues into life, driving towards the Minstermen’s penalty area and releasing Harper, who blazed his shot high over the bar.

The visitors were awarded a penalty in the 75th minute when referee Scott Jackson adjudged Kelly to have handled Hunt’s corner delivery.

Hunt stepped up and sent Gabe Breeze the wrong way, placing his spot kick into the right corner.

Jeff King tested Breeze’s reflexes with a powerful strike, which the Blues had to be sharp to tip over the bar.

Regan Linney flashed a shot wide after Conn-Clarke had weaved his way down the left flank.

Substitute Newby added a third goal late into injury time, tapping in on the rebound to secure the three points.
