Carlisle United beat FC Halifax Town 1-0 in a gritty away performance at the Shay Stadium.
Regan Linney’s second-half effort proved the key moment as the Blues ground out an important victory as they come closer to confirming a play-off spot.
Mark Hughes made two changes from the 6-2 win over Boston United at the weekend, with Terell Thomas and Jack Ellis coming in for Bevis Mugabi and Hayden Atkinson.
The Shaymen looked to make a quick start through Will Harris, who flicked Thierry Latty-Fairweather’s cross narrowly wide of Gabe Breeze’s goal.
A sharp attacking move from United saw David Ajiboye spray a pass out to Linney, who cut back and delivered a cross from deep, which Harvey Macadam headed off target as he arrived at the back post.
Cody Johnson was presented with the opportunity to strike at goal from distance when Stephen Wearne was dispossessed on the edge of his own penalty area, but Breeze made a comfortable save.
Will Hugill was next to test the United stopper after Latty-Fairweather’s cross fell to him at the back post, and some neat footwork allowed him to drive an effort on target, which Breeze diverted away.
Josh Hmami orchestrated a quick break from the hosts, finding AJ Warburton, who flew down the right flank before delivering a vicious cross, which Hugill diverted to the back post but just out of Harris’ reach.
Gilliead’s awareness to prevent a Shaymen breakaway allowed Ellis to pick out Ajiboye, who drove forward and slid through Luke Armstrong to fire at Sam Johnson, but the hosts’ keeper was a match for the effort.
HALF-TIME: FC Halifax Town 0-0 Carlisle United
Harris was inches away from giving his side the lead, glancing Warburton’s header back across the goal, but it did not have the power to cross the line, and Thomas cleared.
A teasing Warburton cross was met by Will Smith, who had joined the attack from defence, but the header was off target.
Linney gave United the lead in the 69th minute after Ellis had broken onto a loose ball and flew forwards before sliding in the Blues’ number ten to fire low into the bottom corner past Sam Johnson.
A powerful driven shot from Hmami on the edge of the box drew an outstanding save from Breeze to turn the ball wide.
Linney soon found Wearne, who attacked the host's box before shifting onto his right foot and bending an effort just wide.
A thunderous half volley from Turner-Cooke flew towards goal, but Breeze was behind it all the way as the Blues saw out the win.
