We caught up with forward Luke Armstrong to discuss his recent goalscoring run, competition at the top end of the pitch, and the challenge awaiting the Blues this Saturday at Rochdale.
Speaking to CUTV, Armstrong reflected on confidence in front of goal, recognition from supporters, learning under Mark Hughes, and the importance of Saturday’s clash in the promotion race.
Here is everything we learnt:
1. Confidence growing in front of goal
“Yeah, feeling good. It’s been a good little spell. I’m looking forward to the few games we’ve got now and I want to keep that going.”
2. Making the most of quality service
“It’s been good to be converting the chances. There’s been some good deliveries put in - David [Ajiboye] the other day and Regan [Linney] not so long ago. It’s great to be getting on the end of them.”
3. Back-to-back Player of the Month recognition
“It’s nice. I feel like I’m getting going and I want to keep that momentum going. It gives good confidence coming into a tough spell.”
4. The importance of winning regularly
“It’s obviously much better than previous seasons. It’s nice to get that winning feeling regularly, but in this league winning most games isn’t enough - you have to win nearly all of them.”
5. Thriving in a competitive squad
“You’re never really too settled. Especially at this club, there’s always people knocking on the door.
6. A healthy battle with Georgie Kelly up front
“It’s been really enjoyable. We’ve both been chomping at the bit to get that starting spot. When one of us isn’t in the team, the other seems to be scoring - it keeps us on our toes.”
7. Learning under Mark Hughes
“I’ve learned a lot from him in terms of movement. He’s been a breath of fresh air and I’ve learned loads from him, especially with the quality he had as a player.”
8. Repaying the manager’s faith
“He really wanted me back in and was full of praise. I wanted to prove him right and I just want to keep striving to do that.”
9. Delighted to see Charlie Wyke return
“It’s brilliant. He’s been unbelievable throughout his injury. Everyone was over the moon to have him back out there because of the lad he is and the quality he brings.”
10. A big test against Rochdale
“They’re flying at the minute and they’re a possession-based team. If we want any chance of getting that top spot, we have to go there and get a good result. It’s a great opportunity to put a dent in it.”
11. Discipline and support key on the road
“We need to be solid, communicate well, and everyone needs to know their job. The away end’s always unbelievable and that really drives us on to get a result.”
