Carlisle United are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former player Les O’Neill, who has died at the age of 81.
Les was part of a United team which rose to the heights of the First Division during the 1974/75 season, having joined the Blues from Bradford City in 1972.
He struck the winning goal against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on the first day of the top-flight campaign, which sent Alan Ashman’s side to the top of the table.
The Blyth-born midfielder made over 150 appearances for the Blues and scored 20 times before moving to Queen of the South in 1977.
He remained an ever-present figure at Brunton Park on matchdays and was involved in the 2024/2025 home kit launch.
Everyone at Carlisle United sends their heartfelt condolences to Les’ family and friends at this time. His service to the club and to his community will not be forgotten.
