BLACK HISTORY MONTH 2025

.

In recognition of Black History Month 2025, Aaron Hayden, Terell Thomas and Bevis Mugabi attended Academy sessions to discuss the significance of the month and its meaning to them.

Hayden and Thomas were present at the Neil Sports Centre with the U9 and U10 age groups, where they were involved in a Q&A led by Academy Head of Player Care, Ankita Nadkarni.

Mugabi was at Caldew School in Dalston, where he and Academy Coach Olivier Bernard spoke to the group about their experiences, led by Academy Manager Steven Rudd.

Steven Rudd, Carlisle United Academy Manager, said: “Ankita has done a great job of organising our Black History Month project.

“The Academy players and parents have put a lot of time into creating some great posters of their favourite players, which raises awareness of EDI in football. We want to develop footballers; however, it is also our responsibility to educate and guide the players into being good human beings who play a positive role in society.

“It was fantastic that Bevis, Aaron and Terrell also came along to share their personal experiences of EDI in football. They are great role models for our Academy players, so having the opportunity to learn from them is invaluable.”

Ankita Nadkarni, Carlisle United Academy Head of Player Care, said: “Overall, the event was a huge success.

“Hearing first-hand experiences from Aaron, Bevis, and Terell was incredibly powerful for our lads; it made conversations around racism more meaningful and relatable.

“Racism isn’t something to be spoken about just once a year; it must remain an ongoing dialogue if we’re to create truly supportive and inclusive environments.

“Talking openly with the players will have a lasting impact on how they help shape the culture of sport in the future. Their engagement throughout the session was brilliant.”

Bevis Mugabi, Carlisle United defender, added: "I really enjoyed spending time with the Carlisle youngsters today for their Black History Month Q&A.

"We talked about football, pride, representation, and how we can all make a difference on and off the pitch."
