BATON OF HOPE

Brunton Park will play host to the Baton of Hope Cumbria tour on Sunday 7 September as leg two on the Penrith to Carlisle route.

The event hopes to bring together multiple third sector organisations, businesses, and individuals to shine a light on the array of support available in the county for those who are struggling with mental health and suicide, and for those bereaved by suicide.

Those who want to attend can do so from 2:00pm, with the Baton arriving at Brunton Park at 3:45pm, where the Baton Bearers will take the Baton around the pitch alongside Olga.

The Baton will then depart at 4:10pm onto the next leg of the tour.

On the day, support organisations: Every Life Matters, Carlisle Eden Mind, The Well, Samaritans, and the Cumberland FA will be on hand to provide support.

Walking Football in the Neil Sports Centre, children's mini baton bearing craft session, and face painting will also be available on the day.

EDI lead for the Club and Community Sports Trust, Teresa Mulholland said: “As a football club at the heart of our community, we’re proud to support the Baton of Hope campaign here in Cumbria.

“Mental health and suicide prevention matter to us all, and by standing together we can help break the stigma, spark vital conversations, and show that no one should ever feel alone. Carrying the baton is a symbol of hope – and we want our players, staff, and supporters to know that there is always help and always hope.

“The Baton of Hope event at Carlisle United will also shine a light on the support services available in our community, whom we continually work with.”

Baton of Hope project lead, Lisa Birdsall added: “We are beyond honoured to have the support and involvement of Carlisle United, Carlisle United Community Sports Trust, and the Cumberland FA for the Baton of Hope tour here in Cumbria.

“As a foundational brick of not just the Carlisle community, but the whole of Cumbria, their backing has been vital in this much-needed initiative for suicide prevention, as staff and fans alike have been affected by suicide themselves.

“We are excited for Brunton Park to host us and all our Baton Bearers on Sunday, 7th September, and we welcome all fans to join us in a day of hope for our beautiful but overlooked county.”
