Exiles boss James Rowberry moved quickly to deal with the departure of assistant Wayne Hatswell who left Rodney Parade just over a fortnight ago to be reunited with Michael Flynn at Walsall.

Carl Serrant moved into the unoccupied position having previously been with Cardiff as a strength and conditioning specialist.

Serrant 46, played for Oldham Athletic, Newcastle United and Bury before moving into coaching.

opposition

Newport went into their weekend away day at Stevenage with a five-game unbeaten run to protect.

Three draws and two victories had kept them well in touch with the automatic promotion places with things very tight at the top.

Their trip to the Lamex went according to plan, woth the run extended to six thanks to goals from Rob Street and Ryan Haynes.

They've been up against promotion rivals Forest Green, Tranmere and Mansfield in the last fsix outings, taking five points from the nine available from those top-of-the-table clashes.

58 goals scored makes them the second best net finders in the division, but 45 conceded is the leakiest defence in the current top seven.

It makes for an interesting night.

who watch

It has to be Dom Telford.

24 goals from 29 games played is the kind of season everybody dreams about.

He netted twice against us back in October and is in blistering form with four form his last seven appearances.

Very mobile and strong he's become a bit of a hero and talisman, so he'll need to be marshalled.

The Blues were in South Wales in October 2021 for a very eventful 2-2 draw. Joe Riley opened the scoring inside the first minute, but Dom Telford turned the game on its head with a brace. Zach Clough levelled things up from the spot and the Exiles had two men sent off along the way.

Watch the highlights from that game here:

United were back at Rodney Parade in April 2021 and the teams battled it out for a point each in what was a tense 0-0 draw.

Watch the highlights from that game here:

These teams met in November 2020 with United breezing into a three-goal lead with goals from Lewis Alessandra and Jon Mellish (2). But it was to be a nervy ending as Jamie Devitt and Josh Sheehan bagged late strikes to keep things interesting.

Watch the highlights from that game here:

The March 2020 trip to Brunton Park for Newport was the last fixture to be played bfore the Covid-19 lockdown was imposed later that week.

United were ahead with just five minutes on the clock when Omari Patrick nodded the ball into the net. JJ Kayode doubled the lead from the spot, and the night got worse for the visitors when Ryan Innis was sent off on the stroke of half time.

Watch the highlights from that game here:

We were down in Newport in October 2019 when a last-minute goal from George Nurse condemned the Blues to an away defeat.

Watch the highlights from that game here:

Prior to that we came together at Rodney Parade in March 2019 and it turned out to be a day for the home side as Ade Azeez and Padraig Amond netted either side of the break to send the Blues home with nothing to show for their efforts.

Watch the highlights from that game here:

Our meeting with the Exiles in November 2018 looked comfortable as Jamie Devitt netted twice to give the Blues a two-goal cushion. Padraig Amond had something to say about that as he pulled the visitors right back into it just before the break. Dan Butler thought he'd earned his side a point with just three minutes left to play, but Danny Grainger bagged himself a goal of the month award and a victory for his team with almost the last kick of the game.

Watch the highlights from that game here:

Both of the 2017/18 season games were draws, with the December trip to Rodney Parade seeing the sides having to settle for a share of the spoils off the back of a 3-3 stalemate. Luke Joyce sparked a much better second half for United when he scored from very close range immediately after the break, but it was nip and tuck and strikes from Tom Miller and Kelvin Etuhu were needed to make sure Carlisle had something to show for their efforts.

Watch the highlights from that game here:

The 17/18 league season ended when these two came together in May right here on our own patch. Mark Ellis put us ahead with less than a quarter of an hour gone, but Padraig Amond restored parity just before the break, and that was just about that as the teams played their way to full time and a well earned summer break.

Martin Coy

Our referee for this fixture is Martin Coy.

Martin has been in charge of 23 games so far this season showing 51 yellow cards and three reds.

Martin was our ref for the Barrow home game in November 2021. Callum Guy was the only United booking and it ended as a goalless draw.

He was at Brunton Park in September 2021 for our 2-1 home win over Salford. Brennan Dickenson scored early, but Josh Morris pegged things back on the stroke of half time. Jon Mellish grabbed the winner in the second half, and Tristan Abrahams, Zach Clough and Callum Guy all had their names taken.

We saw him at Bolton in April 2021 where a first half goal from Eoin Doyle was enough to secure a home win, depsite United dominating much of the play. Joe Riley was the only Carlisle name to be taken.

He was with us in January 2021 for a 1-0 home win over Exeter. Lewis Alessandra scored the goal, and Nick Anderton was the only booking on the day.

The December trip to Harrogate turned into an interesting evening as dipping temperatures sent an already struggling pitch over the edge. Just eight minutes into the game, and with the hosts a goal to the good, Mr Coy deemed that the surface had become too dangerous and United's first ever trip to Wetherby Road was cut short with the match abandoned due to safety reasons.

He was at Brunton Park in October 2020 for the 3-2 home win over Colchester where goals from Lewi Alessandra and Jon Mellish gave us a two-goal cushion. The U's pegged us back with strikes either side of the break, but Aaron Hayden sealed a deserved win with a late goal. Callum Guy, Jon Mellish and Joe Riley were booked on the afternoon.

We also had him for our 3-0 home defeat against Plymouth in January 2020. Aaron Hayden was sent off in the final minute of that fixture as tensions ran high.

Prior to that he was here for the 2-1 defeat at the hands of Port Vale back in November 2019.

Ryan Loft put us ahead with just one minute on the clock, but second half goals from Worrall and Cullen took the points the way of the hosts. Loft and Canice Carroll had their names taken on the day.

We saw him twice in the 2018/19 season, with our first meeting for the home defeat against Grimsby in October. The goal came in the first half from Luke Hendrie, but there were no United names entered into the book.

He was back here a month later for the 1-1 Checkatrade Trophy meeting with Stoke City under-21s. Jack Sowerby scored the goal and Gary Liddle was shown a yellow card.

He was with us three times during the 2017/18 season, with his first visit up north coming in August 2017 for our 3-0 home victory over Cheltenham. Tom Miller and Reggie Lambe added to a fifth minute own goal from Harry Pell, and Mark Ellis was the only Carlisle booking on the day.

We saw him again for our November Checkatrade Trophy group game against Fleetwood, where a certain Jack Sowerby opened the scoring on the night. Wes Burns doubled the lead just before half time, and a late Shaun Miller goal did little to affect the outcome as the visitors took the win come full time. Tom Miller and Jamie Devitt received yellow cards that night.

His last trip to Brunton Park during that campaign was for our 2-2 draw with Crawley in March. Richie Bennett and Hallam Hope appeared to have done the job with goals to give us a 2-0 lead, but the Red Devils recovered and claimed their point courtesy of a brace from Kalen Grant. United names taken were Clint Hill, Hallam Hope and Tom Parkes.
