Defender Mark Ellis has become a permanent fixture in the United defence since making his return to the starting line-up eight games ago and is now part of a team that has kept eight clean sheets from 17 games since the turn of the year.
With another big game coming up against Lincoln City on Monday afternoon, we spoke to him about the current run of form ahead of the Easter Sunday training session.
“Lincoln will be another tough game,” he said. “You know how they’re going to set up and play and you have to deal with it.
“They’ll come at you so you have to win your headers and get first contact as much as you can. It’s a game we’re looking forward to because there’s a lot of confidence around at the moment.”
On the latest clean sheet, picked up in the away victory at Cheltenham on Good Friday, he told us: “It was tough, but it was another case of grinding it out as a group. If you keep a clean sheet you’ve always got a chance, and it’s just a case of staying strong and making sure you deal with anything that’s thrown your way.
“You’ve got to look at how we’re defending as a group. We’re all putting a shift in on the pitch and we’re grinding the results out.
“As a defensive unit we’re obviously enjoying our football at the moment. Saturday was the first time I’ve played beside Clint [Hill] in a back four and you pick things up off him with the experience he has.
“When I wasn’t in the team I was thinking about what I could do to get back in, and I watched the things Clint was doing. You pick stuff up like that as you go along, and for this stage of the season it’s been a good partnership.
“The manager kept saying to the players that we needed to make sure we were ready to play, and I always told him I would be for whenever he needed me. Hopefully we’ll be able to keep the run going and I’ll continue to play my part.”
