Macaulay Gillesphey on the Hartlepool and Stevenage gamesWe caught up with defender Macaulay Gillesphey ahead of the weekend trip to Stevenage to talk about current form and his run of games in the centre back position.
"The Hartlepool game was a bit crazy," he said. "It was back and forth, they were a decent team, their rotation in the midfield caused us a few problems, but you can see we’ve got something special in the changing room. We kept coming back which was great from us.
"Going down to ten men is always tough but we soaked up the pressure well and once we got the lead with Raynesy’s [Michael Raynes] header I felt confident that we could see it out."
"Teams look at us now and know we’re a hard team to beat," he said. "I don’t think we go down easy if we go behind either, we’re always confident we’ll come back and score the goals we need."
On his own form, he said: "I’ve had a good run of games now and I’m finding a bit of consistency, so I’m enjoying it. Playing centre half does make it better for me because I can show people what I’m about.
"I don’t read anything the manager says about me to be honest but it’s good to know he’s saying nice things. I think me and Raynesy work well together, I’m more of a ball player and he’s very good at heading it, but he’s also good on the ball.
“To have Raynesy to my right, Danny Grainger to my left and Mark Gillespie behind me is massive. They’re all a huge help to me."
Speaking about the unbeaten start to the season, he said: "The performances haven’t really taken me by surprise. When you see the lads in training the tempo is unbelievable. They’re a really good set of lads as well and there’s a real belief in the dressing room."
Ahead of the trip to Stevenage, he said: "I’ve actually missed the long trips, it feels like ages since we’ve had one, so I’m looking forward to spending some time with Tom Miller!
"We’re just taking each game as it comes, everyone is full of confidence so hopefully we can keep the run going. Raynesy has scored a couple so hopefully I can get one if I get up there for a set piece ... we’ll have to wait and see!"
