INTERVIEW: Close to my normal self

4 December 2014

Oldham Athletic defender Connor Brown on his loan extension

Oldham defender Connor Brown spoke to us about his one month contract extension earlier this week.

“I’m happy I’ve signed and that I’m going to get to play more games,” he said. “There were no second thoughts about staying at all because I’m enjoying myself here.

“I’ve played four games and hopefully it will go the same for me through December. I’ve felt the match sharpness come back as the games have gone on. You always need to be playing to get that and it’s definitely coming.”

“My gaffer at Oldham was just happy to see I’ve been enjoying myself,” he confirmed. “He knows I’ve been getting games and that’s what we wanted from the move. I just want to be playing and I also want to help Carlisle win some games. I’m not a very good loser and we’re all determined to get the results we want.

“It would be up to the clubs – Oldham and Carlisle – as to whether or not it goes beyond this month, so I’m not really in a position to say beyond that. I am enjoying it here though. I’ll just take it month by month and whatever happens after that happens. It’s a good club and a good set of lads, so I don’t see why not.”

“I feel like I’ve taken a while to get used to things because I’ve never played League Two football before,” he said. “I needed to learn the ropes because it’s a lot more physical. I think I’m getting close to my normal self because I know what I need to do now.

“I think physically there’s a huge difference between the two levels. All the teams you come up against seem to like to play that way. Every league is different and you just need to find your feet and get your bearings so you can crack on.”

“I think the highlight of the first month has got to be the win over Accrington,” he confirmed. “That was three points on the board and it was important for us. I’ve settled fully now. I’ve got to know the lads so I’ve gone from being laid back to cracking a few jokes. I’m just looking forward to the month ahead.”

“I like Keith Curle and I think he’s a good manager,” he said. “He knows what he’s on about and he’s played at a high level, so you know you need to take what he says on board. He’s been there and done it.

“There’s a good atmosphere in the dressing room as well. It doesn’t feel like a club that’s at the bottom end of League Two. Everyone just wants to get out of the position we’re in and crack on up the table.

“We need to bring it into games and stop conceding bad goals. Luck never seems to go your way when you’re down at the bottom of the league and all we can do is stick together.

“Newport is an example because they didn’t need to magic a goal out. It was down to mistakes again. Everyone makes them but we need to cut them out as much as possible and take it from there.

“This is an important period because there are a lot of points up for grabs over the Christmas period. It’s a great month if you’re winning games and it feels completely the other way if you’re losing.”
