LOAN: Midfielder gets the Abbey habit

28 November 2013

Gillies joins Conference leaders

Attacking midfielder Josh Gillies has today joined Skrill Conference Premier League leaders Cambridge United on a one-month loan deal which keeps him at the Abbey Stadium until 1 January 2014.

Gillies, 23, joined United on a two-year deal from Gateshead in June this year and has made a total of ten appearances, including a run of four starts for the first team in August. His last outing came in the JPT defeat at Fleetwood in the middle of November.

“We were in a situation where Josh needed games and this is an ideal opportunity for him to get that,” manager Graham Kavanagh said. "He hasn't really been part of things up here recently and I know he's keen to be playing.

"Cambridge United asked about him and I think this will do him the world of good. It's a level he knows well and it's all about getting confidence in what he's doing again.

"He's a quiet lad, which is no criticism of him, so it's maybe taken him longer to progress than he would have wanted. This should help him to get some belief back and, with all loan moves like this, we want him to come back to us ready to kick on again."
