INTERVIEW: We started really well

Frank Simek on the Tranmere game

Defender Frank Simek gave us his reaction to the away victory at Tranmere at the weekend.

“It was probably our best performance and result of the season so far,” he said.

“It wasn't pretty at times but we did what we had to do. I think you could tell straight away that we were all on our game and that started with the two centre halves. They didn't give their players an inch of space and we all won our tackles and headers. We went on from there and I think we deserved the victory.”

“Apart from the Swindon game we've been doing quite well in the last few weeks, so we were all confident coming into the game,” he added. “We went out and gave a good performance and earned the three points.

“We seemed to win our individual battles across the pitch. I thought we actually played better before the sending off because that meant they had to come at us. We stood firm though and it was a good feeling when we won the game.”

“We started the game really well and that hasn't always been the case this season,” he admitted. “The gaffer has told us that we need to sort that out and we managed to do that today.”

Talking about the red card for Jean-Louis Akpa-Apro he said: “I don't really know what happened. It was a little scrap and he lashed out and kicked me in the shin. The referee saw it and he thought it was a sending off.”

“Scoring just before half time was great,” he told us. “We're all really pleased for Rory [Loy] as well because he's been out for so long.

“He's come a long way and hopefully he can kick on from here and be a big player for us for the rest of the season. Everybody is buzzing for him because he just wanted to be involved again. We all hope he'll stay fit and score some goals for us.”

“Like I say, we all expected them to come at us in the second half because they're the team at the top of the table and they were at home. Mark [Gillespie] made some great saves and kept us in the game, but we all played well.

“I was pleased with my performance but it's hard to pick any individuals out when the whole team plays that well. Everybody has to put a shift in and I thought we did that today. We've got some big games coming up so we'll concentrate on training this week then push on from there.”
