Transfer work ongoing

Officials behind the scenes at Carlisle United Football Club are working hard to secure at least one new loan signing ahead of the Crewe game tonight ... and the signs are positive following a further series of phone calls this morning.

Managing director John Nixon said: "The nature of this game is such that the situation can change at the drop of a hat or, in this case, with just one phone call.

"We've been asking questions and coming close a number of times over the last few weeks and we got to a situation last night where suddenly we were running down a number of avenues.

"There's still work to do but we're very hopeful we'll get one done with a Championship club in time to register the player for tonight's game."

"The way these things unfold is different in every single case," media officer Andy Hall said.

"I'd gone home to do my normal match preparations on Monday night and it was just before 9pm when my phone exploded into life. Suddenly there's a whole new raft of work to do and you can't hide away from the fact it does get exciting as you wait to hear whether you've got it over the line or not.

"We've had some really good phone calls this morning and I think we're in a position where we're as close as we have been for a couple of weeks to making it happen. The target to get him registered for tonight is three hours before kick off ... so we'd better get on with it!

"There are no guarantees, of course, but the nature of the calls today suggest we've got a very good chance."
