Tom Berwick got the early goal to put United in front in the Youth Alliance Cup first round away tie at Rotherham but the Millers equalised to make it 1-1 going into half time.
Kyle Dempsey put the visitors ahead for the second time early in the second half but the home side piled forward to make things interesting as they levelled just after the hour mark.
The Cumbrians then took their chances and Brandon Gwinnutt and Kyle Dempsey earned a comfortable scoreline from what had been a tough game.
Head of youth Eric Kinder said: "We weren't at our best today at all. We looked tried from the extra time we had to play on Wednesday night but the important thing was that we came through it."
