From Preston, Linney began his career with local non-league side Bamber Bridge, making his debut at 17 years of age before being picked up by FC United.

He enjoyed four prolific seasons for the Broadhurst Park outfit, scoring 40 goals in 89 appearances, where he attracted the interest of Altrincham, who paid an undisclosed fee for the lethal attacker.

Linney continued to find the net regularly, scoring 44 goals in 93 appearances for the Robins, becoming one of the most sought-after attackers in non-league.

The Blues paid an undisclosed fee for the forward in May 2025, signing on a three-year deal and has quickly established himself as a fans' favourite at Brunton Park.
