Will Rafferty spoke of his pride after making his first-team debut for Carlisle United in Saturday's Emirates FA Cup victory over Tamworth.
The 18-year-old, who joined the academy at just eight years old, was introduced from the bench as United secured their place in the next round of the competition.
“It was nice, all the lads congratulated me.
“I'm delighted to make my debut.
“I've been here since I was really young, so to make my debut after all the hard work I've put in, it's a big moment.
“I can't believe it really.”
The occasion was particularly special for the United youngster, whose grandfather Billy also represented the Blues.
“It's a big moment for me and my family,” he explained.
“Obviously my grandad played quite a lot of games here and he's a big name in the club's history.
“For me to go on the pitch as well, it's a big moment.”
Rafferty made an immediate impression after coming on, getting himself into a goalscoring position as he looked to make the most of his opportunity.
“I got a shot on goal. I probably should have scored, but I've got to be better with the chance.
“Hopefully next time, if I get another chance, I can score.”
The youngster has been involved with the first-team squad during pre-season and throughout the opening months of the campaign, an experience he believes has helped his development.
“I love being around the first team. Obviously that's where you want to be.
“The characters in there are brilliant and they've treated me really well. I couldn't ask for a better group of lads to go into.”
Having helped United progress in the Emirates FA Cup, Rafferty is hoping Saturday's appearance will be the first of many.
“It's a big thing, getting the win and going into the next round. Hopefully we get a big club, maybe!
“Hopefully there's more first-team action, but I'll just keep working hard and see where it goes.”
