Following Saturday’s 2–1 win away at Altrincham, we spoke to Regan Linney.
Speaking to CUTV, he said: “The most important thing is getting the three points — but to score a goal like that, especially here, was a great feeling.”
On returning to his former club, he added: “I’m confident coming into any game, but yeah — this one meant a bit more. I probably overreacted a bit when I scored, sorry for that, but I’d been getting a bit of stick and I wanted to let it out.”
His goal — the winner — came from a sharp drive in off the left before firing right-footed into the top corner.
“When I cut inside, I thought I’d try my luck. Beat one, went again, got my shot off and it’s gone in the top corner. You’ve got to back yourself when the space opens up.”
Asked about the overall performance, Linney said: “That’s one of our best performances of the season, I think. The weather was tough, some decisions didn’t go our way, but we dug in and saw it through.”
On Harper’s red card, he added: “I think that’s really soft, the second yellow, but we’ve just got to deal with it. We changed the shape a bit, sat a little deeper, stayed compact, and worked really hard to keep them out.”
Georgie Kelly returned to the XI and played a key role in the opening goal — officially awarded as an own goal.
“Georgie’s a handful. He occupied two defenders all game, worked hard off the ball and gave us something to build from. He made a difference.”
Linney reserved praise too for the 1,056 Carlisle fans who filled the uncovered away terrace.
“That was massive. No roof, drenched, but they didn’t stop. You come out for the warm-up and see that — it gives you a lift. All of us appreciate it.”
He added: “That’s what you play football for. It means a lot when the fans travel like that — we want to give them something back.”
With four wins on the bounce, attention now turns to Tuesday’s trip to York.
“We’ll go there to win — nothing else. It’s another tough game but we’ll be ready. We’ve got quality in the squad and belief in how we’re playing.”
Reflecting on the dressing room after full-time, he said: “All the lads were buzzing. We’ve had a few things go against us — missing Luke, the red card — but we’ve come through it. That’s a big three points.”
“Personally, I really wanted to win today. That added something to it — and I’m glad we delivered.”
And finally, on his fast start to the season: “I’m just taking it game by game. I’m enjoying it — I love playing for this club, for the gaffer, and in front of these fans. I just want to keep going and keep scoring.”
