United tested Lovett again with Brad Nicholson's neat reverse pass finding Whelan, and his low cross was diverted goalwards by a Lambs defender, who had to be sharp to make a save.
Linney whipped a delicious pass into Whelan on the edge of the penalty area, who sent a curled effort narrowly wide.
TJ Bramble looked to equalise for the visitors, flying in on goal, but his shot was rushed and off target.
Teo Kurtaran tried his luck from range, which Mair could only deflect back into the six-yard box, with Bramble's follow-up hitting the post.
