EVERYTHING WE LEARNT FROM CALLUM WHELAN: PRE TRURO CITY (A)

.

Ahead of Saturday’s trip to Truro City, we spoke to Carlisle United midfielder Callum Whelan.

Speaking to CUTV, he reflected on his return to the starting line-up, the squad’s togetherness and the opportunity to seal third place heading into the play-offs.

Here is everything we learnt:

1. A return to savour

“When I found out I was playing, I was buzzing. It’s been a while for me, so I really enjoyed it and knew it was my chance to get back in and stake a claim for the final few games.”

2. Making an immediate impact

“I was focused on my overall performance to help the team, but when you contribute to goals, it definitely helps and hopefully gives the manager something to think about.”

3. Patience after frustration

“It was really frustrating getting injured, especially after having a run in the side. Then, when I got fit again, the lads were playing brilliantly, so I just had to stay patient and wait for my chance.”

4. Ready to slot straight in

“That’s why training standards are so important. I haven’t had seven or eight games to build up rhythm, so it was all about making sure I was ready to go straight in and do my job.”

5. Momentum building nicely

“You can definitely feel it in the group. We’re focused on ourselves and ticking games off at the right time, which is exactly what you want going into the big games.”

6. What’s changed this season

“The culture in the group has been miles better. The lads not playing still support the team fully, and there’s been really healthy competition all season.”

7. Putting last season right

“To get this club back into the Football League would mean everything. Last season was horrible, so to put that right straight away would be so special.”

8. All eyes on Truro City

“It’s a long trip, but we’ve got a job to do. Third spot isn’t done yet, so nobody’s going there on holiday; it’s a huge game, and we need a result.”

9. No excuses with preparation

“The club have looked after us by flying us down, which makes it easier. It’s massive credit to them because it gives us no excuses once we’re there.”

10. Incredible travelling support

“Over 800 travelling is mental. I never get bored of saying how incredible they are; it’s a huge reason why I love playing for this club.”
