EVERYTHING WE LEARNT FROM ALEX GILLIEAD: POST SOUTHEND UNITED (H)

.

Following Carlisle United’s 2-2 draw at home to Southend United, we spoke to midfielder Alex Gilliead.

Speaking to CUTV, Gilliead touched on an underwhelming outcome, a point in the right direction and making amends on Tuesday.

Here is everything we learnt:

1. A frustrating evening

“Very frustrated, obviously first half we go two goals up and then just the performance in the second half, I think, just kind of sit off and not really affect them going forward.

“It’s just frustrating and I think we need to put our finger on or find out why we do it because it's happened a couple of times, you know, especially at home.”

2. Early off the mark

“I think obviously we were, first half especially, we were very good. On the counter we caught them a few times and had some good chances and also got in some good areas but it's alright doing it just for 45.

“We need to do it for 90 and I think, you know, we came out second half and kind of sat off a bit and I don't know why we did that. I think it's just kind of a mentality thing, so like I say we'll have to just address it.”

3. Sub-par second half

“Like I say, just, you know, kind of wanting to protect the lead but we can't really do that, especially when we're letting them have the ball and they were coming on to us.

“I think we let them get in good areas and we just didn't seem to get up with the ball enough and then obviously they get the first goal and then, you know, the unfortunate second goal, the ricochet goes in the back of the net and then obviously we needed to try and find another goal which we couldn't do.”

4. Lack of control

“We allowed them to dictate to us what they wanted to do and, you know, it's tough. Teams come here and it's a big pitch and obviously get about us but I feel like we can affect them more and especially in the first half we showed how good we were on the counter.

“It's just disappointing that we, you know, we let it slip in the second half.”

5. Fans out in their numbers

“I think the fans were fantastic, you know, especially, like you say, we got a goal early and then the first half was very good. We defended well, had a little chance at the end of the half but, I don't know.

“I just kind of put my finger on why obviously second half was kind of the total opposite and we had no control really over the game and let them dictate. But to have 10,000 here is amazing and we’re sorry we couldn't get the three points.”

6. Licking our wounds

“We've picked up a point, it's not a loss, you know, obviously we're disappointed that it feels like a loss but it's still a point in the right direction.

“We’ve got another game on Tuesday that we can bounce straight into and obviously try and get the three points there.”

7. Drawing a line under it

“I think, you know, it's a tough one to take, it does feel like a loss but, like I say, it's another point in the right direction for what we need.

“Like I say, we can obviously pick the bones out of it and make sure it doesn't happen again.”

8. Making amends on Tuesday

“Obviously get some good rest in and then coming in Monday. We'll probably have a look at the game and then obviously the tension turns straight onto Aldershot and we'll go down there and, like I say, try and get three points there.
