Sky Sports have now confirmed the details of the new broadcast deal which will see at least 20 of United’s games shown live during the 2024/25 season.
Sky will show over 1,000 EFL games during the course of next season on their brand-new channel ‘Sky Sports+’.
This service will replace the current iFollow service for UK based supporters. Games not shown live on Sky Sports+ will not be available to watch online in the UK.
Every game from the opening weekend, final day, and all midweek fixtures in the EFL will be shown live on Sky Sports+, as will all games played on Bank Holidays including Easter, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. This includes all Carabao Cup and Bristol Street Motors Trophy games.
Any match played in League One or League Two during an international break will also be shown live.
There is a potential for games to be moved for broadcast, but the majority should be played at 12.30pm on Saturdays. TV selections for all games until January will be confirmed before the start of the season to allow fans to plan travel arrangements in advance.
International fans will be able to continue streaming games where matches are not being broadcast exclusively, such as on Sky Sports Main Event. This can be done by purchasing match passes via a new club streaming service, with more details to follow.
Chief executive Nigel Clibbens said: “The new deal is 60% bigger than the previous deal which means the club will gain financially.
“At the same time however, domestic streaming via iFollow will end and the club will lose that income. In 2022/23 in League Two, the club earned around £164k from UK streaming and in 2023/24 in League One, this will be even bigger.
“In 2024/25, this will fall to zero. The gain from the TV deal is around £300k per season in League Two, so overall we are better off by around £130k per year in League Two.
“In terms of games streamed, last season 19 of our games were available in the UK to be streamed live, plus the final game against Derby County which was shown live exclusively on Sky Sports. This excluded the Carabao Cup which was not available in the UK.
“Looking at next season, given the Carabao Cup is included in the deal, the minimum number of live games available in the UK (20) is in-line with last season.
“Except for the opening and final games of the season, the arrangements for screening Saturday 3pm kick-offs are unchanged. Clearly, to accommodate more live matches whilst retaining the blocked hours, some fixtures will have to be rescheduled away from traditional kick-off times. In the past, fans have suffered from late scheduling changes, so we are delighted that the EFL and Sky have committed to announcing all TV fixtures until January at the start of the season.
“Overall, this is the biggest change in EFL broadcasting arrangements in many years. It will increase our income and change the way fans watch games. It will be great to see United live on Sky Sports+ next season.”
