YOUTH: Barnsley FA Cup

United hosted Category 2 side Barnsley at Brunton Park on Tuesday night in the first-round proper of this season's FA Youth Cup.

There was a minute of applause ahead of kick-off, in memory of Dave Wilkes, a man who had both clubs close to his heart.

The Blues started on the front foot, with Fitzpatrick on corner duty, but his early delivery was cleared at the front stick.

United had defending to do when Bland sent a set piece into the mix from deep, but O'Brien showed first to get it away.

Barnsley came again with Bates, who was in space, and he sent a raking pass to Kozluk, who had ventured forward. The right back opted to shoot from out wide and Barry stood his ground as he gathered it into his chest.

A high press from a goal kick forced a corner for the hosts, but Park found the first man with plenty forward waiting for the ball.

A huge pass forward from Bland was well controlled by Alker, as the Tykes attacked in numbers, and the striker got the ball out from under his boot before going for the target from distance. Barry pulled it under control at the second attempt.

Barnsley looked to break at every opportunity and Nzondo covered ground, shadowed by Hetherington. The midfielder blocked it for a corner and that pinged around before falling in front of Monteiro. His volley on the turn from 16-yards was blocked and hooked high.

Carlisle responded with a lovely piece of skill from Swinburn as he took the ball out of the air. He drifted wide but his clip across the face of goal bounced away to safety.

Keeper Jacob Barry had to concentrate when a McCann free kick from deep evaded everybody and skipped off the surface. He showed safe hands, and his punt led to a free kick at the other end. Aran Fitzpatrick had plenty to celebrate as he stroked a beauty of a 23-yard finish into the top corner.

Barnsley levelled things up on 37 minutes when Alker got his head down in the centre circle. He used pace to break away, and he looked up to see Nzondo in support. He received the pass well and steadied himself before curling it into the bottom corner.

Away tails were up and Nzondo ran at the heart of the back line as he probed for a way through. The blue wall didn't falter and Barry was off his line to claim a high cross.

The dangerous Nzondo showed again just before the break when he stepped inside to make a gap. His 19-yard shot took a wicked deflection and spun just past the upright.

United were dealt a blow with just three minutes on the second half clock when Alker flighted a pass towards the corner flag. It appeared to be going out until Nzondo got a sprint on to recover it. McCann steamed in at the back post to bury his volley from the cut back.

There was terrible luck for the young Blues on 53 minutes when Kozluk overlapped to deliver on the run. Maddison went to clear it, but it came off his shin before it crossed the line via the inside of the post.

Barry was called into action to save twice in quick succession from McCann, who struck two thunderbolts at the bottom corner, but it was a short-lived reprieve as Bland whipped a corner towards the penalty spot. Yoganathan jumped to meet it and his header flew into the waiting net.

United didn't give it up, but their deliveries were mopped up every time they tried to make something happen.

Barnsley made sure of the result on 74 minutes when Kozluk jinked past his man before swinging the ball into the mix. Nzondo met it with a firm header that bulged the roof of the net after it bounced up off the line.
