MANAGER: We all know goals change games

As Carlisle boss Paul Simpson said after the game on Sunday, it’s now about finding the goals that will see United through the second 90 minutes against Bradford when the teams go at it again on Saturday afternoon.

“The only thing missing from the work we did was the finish,” he said. “We had the opportunities, but we haven't been able to finish them off. On another day, we could easily have got three or four goals, so that's a little bit disappointing.

“There are so many positives we've got to take into the rest of this week to prepare properly, for a fantastic game back home next Saturday.

“What we have to do is keep creating the chances because we do have the players who will score.  And the quality of some of the chances was really good.

“The Edmo header was one of them. I can’t actually work out what happened because it looked to me like he was just stretching a little bit and I don't really know. But it was a fantastic cross in, a wonderful ball in.

“I think it was Jack Armer out there, but I just think as a group they’ve done really well. I thought the starters hung in there after going to go down and showed good composure and then the finishers who come on, they made an impact on the game.

“I thought Taylor Charters and Jordan Gibson showed a bit of energy down here. All in all, there's loads and loads of things that we can all be pleased about. We just know we'll need to be a bit better in that final third in terms of finishing it when it comes to next weekend.

“We've given ourselves an opportunity. They'll they know that they're ahead, they know they're in the driving seat. We get them back at home where we've done really well this season and we've got to make sure that we put on a really, really big performance that allows us to have another game after that.

“And, of course, the goals. They change games, don’t they.  That's the fine margins that you have to get right. We didn't get those fine margins right in the first one, we didn't clear the first header and we didn't clear the second ball.

“Then at the other end, those fine margins didn't go our way, and I don't think the referee’s fine margins went our way either. There were a lot of things that were really close, but just not quite close enough.”

And explaining the changes to the team and formation last Sunday, he told us: “I just felt as though I wanted to look at Jack Armer at centre back last week because it's the best place to look at him in a proper game at Sutton.

“I felt as though although I thought Jack Robinson did well for us, I felt it took a little bit away from us in terms of having Jack out of it. And then it was a case of who goes into the extra centre position, Ben Barclay is a centre back who's done really well at wing back.

“I felt it was a game for Joel to give us that proper balance down the right hand side. And I felt with Joe Garner, he was going to give us a base to build from, somebody who could get hold of the ball, somebody who could be a nuisance up there.

“Unfortunately, I thought he got absolutely battered off the ball, probably four or five times and I just cannot believe how the referee didn't give any of those.

“It’s all fine margins and we have to do what we can to make the fine margins go our way in the second leg.”
